Darien's Lifeline
I drew information from all sources,
including the Sailor Moon R and Sailor Moon SS movie.
Darien was orphaned as a small child when he and his parents were in a car crash. His
parents died, and in turn, his memory was lost. While he was in the hospital, he gained a
(alien) friend named Fiore who came to earth because his planet was destroyed.
One day, while Darien was in the hospital, a very young Serena (about two years old, I
think) walks by his room. She peers into Darien's room and notices him crying. She goes in
and asks why he is crying. Darien answers that his friend is going to go away and then he
won't have any more friends. Serena smiles, plucks a rose from the bouquet she had planned
to give to her mom in honor of her little brother Sammy's birth, and hands him it. She
tells him, "I'll be your friend."
Later that day, Darien rushes to the rooftop of the hospital just before Fiore's
departure. Darien gives Fiore the rose Serena had just given him as a good-bye present.
Fiore is very touched by this gesture and promises to return with beautiful
flowers for him.
Many years pass, and one day, while Darien is walking past a middle school who should conk
him in the head with a pitiful test paper reading F, but Serena! He doesn't remember her
at all from their early meeting in the hospital (That amnesia is really powerful, who
could forget that hair! ^_~), which might be the reason he teases her and calls her,
"Meatball Head." Serena obviously doesn't remember either, for she sticks her
tongue out at him and stalks away. They meet again and again, and each time Darien teases
her joyfully, while Serena storms away in anger. Each of them consider the other very
annoying. Soon after, Darien begins dating Serena's friend, Rei.
Darien at first seems unaware that he is Tuxedo Mask, but soon it becomes clearer and
clearer as his dreams of a girl pleading for his help becomes more and more often. He
often helps Sailor Moon in her battles with the Negaverse, arriving just in time to save
her. During one fight, he drops a locket during a fight, and Sailor Moon picks it up.
Tuxedo Mask tells her she can keep it and vanishes into the night. This is around the time
Sailor Moon and the Negaverse were battling for the seven crystals, in which Queen
Serenity captured the Seven Shadows in. Sailor Moon, Tuxedo Mask, and the Negaverse each
have a few crystals, but nothing can be done with any of the crystals unless you have all
seven. Sailor Moon becomes very confused when Tuxedo Mask tells her she can keep the
locket because in the past he had been very harsh, telling her he wanted the crystals she
had. Tuxedo Mask had always helped the Sailor Scouts, but he never told anyone the reason
he wanted to crystals was because the princess in his dream kept begging for the crystals.
She said it was the only way Darien could save her.
While walking down the street one day, Serena sees Darien, and slaps him on the back,
saying there was a bee on his back. Darien flinches in pain and Serena discovers blood on
her hand and on his shirt. Darien had gotten hurt in the last battle with the Negaverse,
but tells Serena that he got hurt in a karate match and was going to see the doctor.
Serena doesn't believe him and, concerned, she follows him. Most unfortunately, Darien is
on his way to a winner take all battle with Zoicite for the crystals at the Tokyo Tower.
Darien steps into a some kind of force field of Zoicite's and Serena is also captured.
Serena faints as the force field, with them inside, floats up to the tower. Even though
Darien appears to hate Serena, when he comes face to face with Zoicite, he demands that no
matter what happens, Serena won't be harmed.
Darien sets the crystals down, and immediately, Malachite comes by and snatches them.
Zoicite disappears upstairs and says they'll battle there. Serena wakes up and the floor
begins to cave in. Darien and Serena run into a nearby elevator. Serena suspects that
Darien is Tuxedo Mask, but doesn't want to believe it. They chat and Serena accidentally
says something which causes Darien to suspect
her to be Sailor Moon, but convinces himself a meatball head like her could never be
Sailor Moon. Zoicite wants to end the battle then and there, so she sends a burst of
flames their way. Trying to save herself and Darien, Serena has no choice but to transform
and reveal herself to a very shocked Darien. When Serena faces Zoicite, Zoicite tells
Tuxedo Mask to come forth. Serena's eyes widen with surprise, as Darien transforms into
Tuxedo Mask. Then, in his battle with Zoicite, Zoicite sends a sharp crystal spear at him
from behind and it stabs him in the shoulder. Serena cries as she realizes Darien is
dying, but as soon as the first tear falls, the seven crystals disappear from Malachite's
possession and Serena turns into the Moon Princess in Darien's dreams. (See The Moon Kingdom
Story for full details of Darien and Serena's past)
The other Sailor Scouts arrive just in time to see Serena turn into the Moon Princess.
Serena turns back into Sailor Moon and faints. Queen Beryl, furious at Zoicite, orders her
and Malachite back and has them take Darien with them.
As the tower around them crumbles, the Sailor Scouts desperately try to find a escape
route, Sailor Jupiter carrying Sailor Moon. Darien, meanwhile, had been kidnapped (or
should I say heronapped? ^.^ Sorry, sorry, back to the story) by Queen Barrel who
brainwashed him to think he was a evil prince, set against Sailor Moon, not beside her. In
the final battle against Queen Barrel, Sailor Moon uses the locket Tuxedo Mask gave her
long before to remind Darien of their love and, finally, overcomes the brainwashing.
Short as their reunion was, after the battle against Queen Barrel, (in which Sailor Mars,
Mercury, Venus, and Jupiter all die and Sailor Moon conquers Queen Beryl by herself,
proving she's not that much of a ditz) everyone's memories were erased and Darien and
Serena return to teasing each other. Serena regains her memory, for Ann and Alan and their
doom tree come along to destroy earth. But Darien doesn't get his memory back until much
later, after all the scouts have, too.
However, when Serena needs his help the most, Tuxedo Mask does not show. Instead, the
Moonlight Knight comes to save her. She suspects that he is really Darien, but she herself
finally wonders, "How can it be? Darien in the same room with the Moonlight Knight?
It can't be!" She finally learns that the Moonlight Knight is part of Darien, of his
soul and spirit. He knows he must protect Sailor Moon somehow, but he can't be Tuxedo Mask
anymore, so the Moonlight Knight protects her instead. In the end, he regains his memory
and everyone is happy, happy, happy.
Serena and Darien spend one day together, boating and having picnics on a lake, before a
pink haired little girl falls out of the sky (literally!) and lands on Darien while he and
Serena are kissing (or should I say stuck together, because Serena had just been eating
caramel fudge and butterscotch). Darien immediately assumes the little girl is in some way
related to Serena, for she acts so much like her (causing many, many arguments.) Thus, the
name Chibi-usa is born! (Chibi for little, usa for Usagi (Serena). Little Serena. Cute,
isn't it?) Rini seems to like Darien a lot (often saying that Darien has dumped Meatball
head Serena and he is now her girlfriend) and Darien cares for her a lot, making Serena
very jealous.
Darien begins to have strange dreams and daydreams soon after Rini appears. He appears to
be getting married to Serena, and suddenly, she is wrenched away from him. A deep voice
tells him that if he and Serena stay together any longer, the world, along with Serena
will be in grave danger. Darien doesn't tell anyone. Instead, he takes matters into his
own hands, and feeling sad, yet determined, he tells Serena he doesn't love her anymore
and says that he doesn't want to see her anymore. Serena is saddened and hurt by this
sudden change in Darien. Yet, no matter how she begs and pleads and asks what she did
wrong, Darien refuses to tell her anything about his dream. Then, just when Sailor Moon
needs him most, Tuxedo Mask is always there, although he is unwilling to speak to Sailor
Moon about anything after the battle.
Shortly afterward, they journey to the future to see what's really going on. They learn
that the little girl that has become so attached to Darien is really his and Serena's
daughter. Darien and Sailor Moon learn that Neo-Queen Serenity, Serena's future self, is
under a spell, in which she is asleep and can not be awoken. They also learn that the Doom
Phantom is trying to destroy the earth. sailor Moon and Tuxedo mask try to save the world,
but meanwhile, Rini has disappeared with no trace. They worry and look for her everywhere,
when it turns out the Doom Phantom has captured her and made her think of how all of the
Sailor Scouts and her mother, Neo-Queen Serenity, has called her names and turned their
backs on her when she needed them most. The Doom Phantom transformed her into Wicked Lady,
a older evil version of herself. After several battles, Sailor Moon finally turns her back
into little Rini. They destroy the Doom Phantom and everything goes back to normal.
One day, while walking in a garden with Serena, strange flower petals start falling around
Darien. Fiore appears all grown and says he has returned to give Darien his flower. It
turns out Fiore has befriended a strange flower that wants to take over the world (so
what's new?). The scouts go and destroy it, but they also set Fiore free so he can start
all over again and this time, not bring back any deadly flowers.
About a year later, just when we think that Serena and Darien's love has gone through
everything it can go through, they must face one more hurdle: Darien goes to college. He
is accepted for a program at Harvard. Serena is saddened by his going away and doesn't
want him to go, but she knows that this is a dream come true for him and must be happy for
him. At a sad and tearful good-bye at the airport just moments before Darien boards his
plane, he turns and slips a ring on Serena's hand. (We all know what this means.) Serena
promises to write him every day and
call if she has enough allowance. Darien turns and boards his plane. (Just moments before
Seiya makes his move on Serena....). Darien sits in his seat and looks sadly at a picture
of himself, and a smiling Serena and Rini. Two seconds
later, golden light illuminates the plane.
Serena begins to seriously worry about Darien, as none of her letters were replied to.
They find out that Darien never got to Harvard. The Sailor Scouts finally confront their
toughest enemy yet, Galaxia, and learn more terrible news: Galaxia stole his star seed.
The golden light was the cover up for Galaxia to steal everyone's star seeds that was on
Darien's plane. They battle, the star seeds are returned, Darien and Serena get married,
and the happy ending comes true.
