One small step, one giant leap in US-Vietnam reconciliation
OPERATION MOONSHOT:  An American and Vietnamese Journey from War to Peace to Space
1996-2007
In 1996 project Operation Moonshot was conceived as an inspirational vision of peace and cooperation between the United States of America and the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam resulting from the life's efforts of two American Viet Nam veterans:  Mr. Bobby Muller and Mr. William Broyles, Jr, both US Marines during the Vietnam War.  Mr. Muller, the co-founder and first President of the Vietnam Veterans of America, led the first delegation from VVA back to Ha Noi during Christmas of 1981--a visit which changed his life and opened the process of reconciliation between US veterans and their former foes.  Resulting from this historic visit, fellow US veteran journalist,  Mr. William Broyles, Jr.,  followed a similar path by relinquishing his top position as Editor-in-Chief of Newsweek to make his equally historic return trip to Vietnam in September of 1984.  Upon his return to America Mr. Broyles published his remarkable memoir, Brothers In Arms:  A Journey from War to Peace in which he describes his meeting with Vietnamese Cosmonaut Pham Tuan (a founding member of the Association of Space Explorers) --a meeting which inspired the creation of project Operation Moonshot twelve years later.

"When you are standing on the Moon, looking back at the Earth, there is no United States of America, no Viet Nam, no countries at all.  There is only the EARTH with WE the HUMAN FAMILY living upon it.  This is a just and good idea and it seems this project ought to be named "Operation Moonshot"
