The Lakes was a gorgeous condo complex - even just the tropical landscaping (pool in back) was gorgeous! |
Erin's Journal for 2/14 to 2/15//03 Queensland Valentine's Day, Friday, we were relaxing in Cairns. Glenn was set on spoiling me today, so we started out by sleeping late, as I was still having trouble sleeping with my sunburn. We got up around 9:30 and had cereal, then lazed around the apartment for another couple of hours, just watching tv, reading, and in general enjoying the luxury of our place. I made us some huge sandwiches with the fresh veggies and stuff, then we finally got out to drive around town a little. We went to the 'center' of Cairns, which is only about 2 blocks long and 8 blocks wide, and ended up in an internet cafe. We only planned an hour there, since we had 2 hour parking, but got distracted wanting to catch up with everyone back home, and ended up being there 2 hours. We fed the meter a little more, and wandered around the pricey tourist shops. The only result of our shopping was a new bathing suit for me, tough to try on with my burn, but it'll be perfect for Fiji and a needed replacement for my disintegrating other suit. There wasn't much else out there that interested us, and the weather was really hot and muggy, so we soon headed back to the apartment to cool off. Glenn headed to the pool, while I enjoyed the movie channel and put more aloe on my burns. By the time Glenn got back, we got sucked into watching another movie, and by the time we mustered energy to get dressed up, it was 7:30pm! We didn't have dinner reservations anywhere, but had a couple of recommendations on places to eat, so we drove down to the strand again and went to the Matlin Resort, where they had a steak & seafood buffet deal. The food wasn't anything special, but the company was! We had a wonderful romantic night, discussing plans for the wedding & our future together, then came home to snuggle up. A tough-to-beat Valentine's Day! 2-15-03 Saturday we started the day with a call from Glenn's parents. We'd emailed out our phone number to our parents the day before, and it was great to catch up again. Only 2 weeks till we see them in Fiji! Afterward I cooked up some eggs for a change, and we sat together watching some exciting Cricket recaps on ESPN. I'm actually starting to understand it a little! We had no plans today at all but to relax, and tomorrow is our market day, so we again did nothing but relax till about lunchtime. Then Glenn and I went to the pool. It felt great, but I couldn't sit out in the hot sun at all, so after a quick swim I went back upstairs to catch up on journals and finish a new batch of postcards. For dinner we made chicken cacciatore (from a jar, but still yummy), and we caught another movie before bed. (I'm really getting my movie fix caught up here!) Tomorrow we'll take the train to Kuranda in the highlands near Cairns for the local market and views of the rainforest. |
