Erin's Journal for 9-18-02

Today we were pretty much done with museums, so we chose to do the zoo instead. We got up late, knowing we also wanted to go visit the huge glass dome atop the Reichstag and view the city by night. So we lazed about in the room till almost 11am before getting up and taking off. I have been having trouble sleeping here, due to pillow, street noise, etc. Not sure completely why...but it's starting to catch up with me. Perhaps going to bed earlier might help!

Anyway, we grabbed some food on the way to the U-Bahn (subway), got all-day passes for city transport, and took the U-Bahn to the zoo station. We found our way in at the side gate, and were just in time for the elephant feeding. Glenn was reminding me that we'll be seeing many of these animals in their natural state next month, which made this viewing a little depressing...but it was still very enjoyable. I especially liked the monkeys and the white wolves.

We spent several hours there (till it closed at 6pm), then wandered around the zoogarten district a bit, checking out the shopping opportunities and the rather doubtful street vendors before grabbing a good Chinese meal with a great view of the area. We were then ready to head to the Reichstag, and only waited about 25 minutes to get into the admittedly tight security. Once up at the roof/dome level though, we had great views of the night city. It's huge, so we could see lights far, far away. There was also a good monument to the history of the Reichstag at the bottom of the dome, which we checked out before leaving.
Tired by then, we just headed back and had a beer before retiring to the room to relax before bed.
