Erin's Journal for Nanyuki (10-26-02)

Today we left Samburu, watching for animals on the way out. We were to head back to Nanyuki today and stay at the base of Mt. Kenya overnight, and this afternoon was to be a tour of the Mao-Mao caves, home of the freedom-fighters in Kenya's fight for independence from England back in the 1960's.

We made it back to Nanyuki around lunchtime, and stayed in a lodge a bit off the main road, which was nice. The lodge itself was another 'budget hotel' and nothing special, but at least it had hot water and a quiet room. We lunched there before reloading into the van with a new guide to see the caves.

About an hour from town, we stopped and left the van, and walked up a muddy, elephant-poo strewn trail for about 90 minutes to get to this large half cave, which had been the site of the hidden freedom-fighters' camp until it was finally spotted by the British (they saw camp smoke) and blown up. Now it is just a mosquito-infested muddy area visited by local high school students for campfires, and we were somewhat underwhelmed after the long trek.

We hiked back down the 90 minute mud trail to the Mountain Lodge, where we were to meet Richard. He wasn't there when we arrived, so Glenn joined in on a lawn-volleyball game in progress with lodge staff while I sat on a swing and watched. After about an hour, Richard finally got there to pick us up, and we made it back to the hotel for dinner and some entertainment by watching Richard play pool with a fellow driver.
A few days after we returned to Nairobi, we heard that elephants in the Nanyuki area had destroyed homes and caused a general mess!
