Erin's Western Australia Journals - 11-25-02 Today we woke early, prepped and packed, and were driven by our generous host, Ken, to the rental agency. We picked up our car and were pleased to drive off in the first mobile freedom we've had this trip. We only rented cars 2 other times on the entire trip: once in Corfu for a day, and once in Santorini for a day. So to have our own transportation for 5 whole days seems like utter decadence! We headed south along the coastal route, and for a couple of hours, mostly saw highway and industrial stuff mixed with a bit of grass and shrubbery. We hit our first few towns then, and were specficically looking for Bunbury, where we'd have lunch and check out the Dolphin Experience. We arrived a bit after lunch, actually, having stopped along a scenic drive near an estuary, but found Bunbury and some gorgeous beaches along the way. The dolphins weren't around by the warm mid-afternoon when we arrived, but we enjoyed the exhibits there and plotted how we could return one early morning when they usually visited the center. After Bunbury, we continued along the coastal route, ending up in Busselton, home to the longest jetty (pier) in the southern hemisphere. We paid our $2.50 each to walk all the way out there, and got to watch some pile drivers on a boat drive a huge tree trunk into the ocean bed! By the time we were done gawking there, we decided to call it a day and find a place to stay nearby. We ended up in a rather nice motel, where our room had a refrigerator and everything! We went out for a quick dinner and picked up some groceries for breakfast. As we paid, the cashier asked if we'd seen any kangaroos yet. I'd seen 2 dead on the roadside, but no live ones, so he gave us quick directions to a field nearby where they gathered right at the current time, sunset! We drove over there and watched dozens of these amazing animals for almost a half hour until the light was gone before heading back to the hotel. I was tired, but tv won anyway. We watched an old episode of Friends, then some local Greek/Australian sitcom, then settled in with a 2 hour episode of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire! Glenn was snoring quickly, but I got caught up in some French movie in subtitles till after midnight. Stupid! |
This pristine beach was at Meelup Bay, right outside of Busselton |
