Erin's Western Australia Journals - 11-29-02

This Friday was our last day in the southwest, and we had to return to Perth by 5pm to return our rental. We got up early and found a McDonalds for breakfast, then rushed down to the Dolphin Discovery Center to hopefully see the dolphins near shore. We arrived around 9:15, and waited with a pretty big crowd on the beach. We lay out with our bathing suits and sunscreen to wait, but by 10:45am no dolphins had arrived, so we decided to splurge on the boat tour to make sure we saw some. It was well worthwhile, as we got across the bay and immediately found a group of 4 playing in the shallow waters.

For the next hour, we toured around that little area, seeing almost 30 dolphins swimming together and in little groups. We got some fun photos, but it was better just hanging over the side, watching them play and check us out. When we finally returned to the beach, a couple of the dolphins paced the boat for almost the entire journey. It's so exhilarating to see them jump with the boat!

By then it was almost lunchtime, but we weren't really hungry and drove up the coast toward Perth. We stopped after an hour or so in Manjimup for lunch, and found a nice shirt for Glenn to wear at our beach wedding while browsing the shops there. We will have a pretty informal wedding, but will still look GOOD!

We called Ken from the pay phones there to let him know we'd be back in town to return the rental car, and he kindly agreed to meet us there to pick us up. We chatted with him on the way back to the house, sharing the adventures we'd had. We had put 1400 km on the car in just 5 days, but seen quite a lot of wonderful stuff. When we arrived at the house, Ken & Adele's daughter Fiona and her 3 kids were there as well, so we chatted with them till dinnertime, then took a walk in the park before dinner. We bought a bottle of wine for dinner to say thanks for Ken and Adele's warm hospitality, and talked with Glenn's parents before bed.
