What would a visit to Sydney be without a picture of the Sydney Opera House!!! |
Glenn's Journal 01-28-03 & 01-29-03 Sydney Tuesday morning and it's our first full day in the Sydney area. After sleeping in this morning and waking up to a spectacular view of Whale Beach and the ocean we began our day. We spent the morning looking through the many options of things to do in and around Sydney. After spending until noon doing research we decided to take a drive down the coast from Whale Beach to Manly. We stopped at a few beaches during the afternoon taking in the splendor of the waves breaking on shore and the sun shining on the rock pools and sand. Manly wasn't the only spectacular beach along the coast but it sure is a great choice of a place to spend the day. After spending the afternoon at the beach we worked our way back to the house in time for dinner. Pauline made a wonderful dinner for us. After dinner we chatted with Pauline and Graham before calling it an evening around 10:00 pm. We also spent some time planning the rest of our week to include touring around Sydney on Wednesday, the Sydney Bridge climb on Thursday, Riverdance on Friday night, and spending Saturday at the markets. 01-29-03 Sydney We caught the bus into the city for two reasons, one, traffic in the city and the one way streets makes it hard to get around, and two, we wanted to take the bus so we know the route that we need to take to get to the Bridge Climb office tomorrow morning. The bus took us over an hour and dropped us off at Wynyard, which is the first stop after you cross the Sydney Harbor Bridge. We then walked towards "The Rocks" district and Cumberland Street. After 15 minutes or so we found our way to the Bridge Climb office. We felt pretty good that our planned timing for tomorrow morning would work out. We walked by the office around 9:15 am, the same time as our Bridge Climb tomorrow, and it started to sprinkle. We hoped that it would be a nicer day tomorrow but they do climb even in the rain. Since it was raining we walked through some of the shops around "The Rocks" until it stopped raining. We then found our way along the harbor to Circular Quay (The ferry docks) and stopped for lunch before catching a ferry over to Watson's Bay. We took a few too many photos of the Opera House but I am sure we will sort through them later. At Watson's Bay we took a hike around to the Lighthouse at the tip of the point. Along the way we came across a nude beach but it worked out in Erin's favor as their were mostly men sunbathing and swimming naked. The walk around to the lighthouse and back took less than a hour and we were on the next ferry back to Circular Quay. We spent the afternoon taking a closer look at the Opera House and enjoying the gardens and the park along the harbor before continuing on. We were contemplating staying in the city until dark so we could capture the city lights but we also had to be up extra early to be in the city for the Bridge Climb. We opted to head over to Darling Harbor and China town for dinner before finally deciding just to head home. We arrived home after another hour plus on the bus. It was after 8:00 pm and we were pretty warn from the day in the city. We didn't stay up too late as we had to catch a 7:20 am bus in the morning. |
