Glenn's Journal for 10-24-02 - Samburu We are off to Samburu and our first accommodation in a lodge. I promised Erin that the rest of the safari would be a lot nicer in the lodges, and I was right!!! On the way to Samburu we stopped at Thompsons Falls to enjoy the waterfall (and more shopping opportunities). The falls were beautiful but the hassle from the guys dressed up as warriors who, for 100 shillings, could have their picture taken. We were also met by two young ladies very well dressed that invited us back to their shop after our viewing of the waterfall. Of course the ladies never left our sides. After showing us their shop and going through the whole routine of "No worries" but then pestering us the whole time we quickly skipped looking at any of the other shops and took off. We stopped in Nanyuki for lunch where we actually had a chance to use the internet while Richard ran off to have some work done on the van. We spent 30 minutes e-mailing the parents only as the connection speed was the slowest we had seen in a while. What do you expect way out in the bush like this??? After lunch and talking with a few of the shop owners we headed out to Samburu. We arrived in time for our afternoon game drive which was spectacular as we came across our first leopard of the trip. We also saw plenty of other animals but we spent most of our time watching the leopard. We also came across two elephants fighting, or at least tussling, with each other. We did not want to get too close as we did not want to get into the scuffle. We arrived into the lodge around 6:00 pm and were not disappointed. The lodge was beautiful and included some fantastic meals and views. We had a huge room that slept four along with a bathroom that included shower and tub. The view from the room was of the river, which included crocodiles, lizards, and many birds. The lodge included a pool, which we would try and enjoy tomorrow, along with a feeding of a leopard from across the river. We quickly jumped into the HOT shower and spent quite some time enjoying it. (Don't get any ideas!!!) We arrived at dinner around 8:00 pm where we enjoyed a 4 course meal with more than enough food. We were pretty happy with these accommodations. We relaxed for the rest of the evening before calling it a night. |
The Samburu Lodge was gorgeous - just what we needed! |
