The beach at Bunbury, one of our first Australian beaches. Clearly, you can have a pristine beach all to yourself here! |
Glenn's Journals 11-25-02 Western Australia Today we are preparing to spend the rest of the week traveling around the southwest part of Australia. After packing up and breakfast Ken was nice enough to drop us off at a car rental place in Freemantle. This would be our first test of driving on the other side of the road but we both knew that we would have to help each other our for a while with our driving skills. The plan for the week was to drive along the coast as far as we could get (hopefully to Albany) before finding our way back to Perth for our flight to Adelaide on Saturday. The first town we stopped in was Bunbury where we stopped for lunch before heading out to the Dolphin Discovery Center. We were hoping to see some dolphins which, on a good day, will swim near you while you wade knee high into the water. We had arrived around 2:00 pm so it was after their usual time (in the cool morning). We toured through the center including watching a video about dolphins and the marine life in the surrounding ocean. Erin was keen on the idea of seeing dolphins so we decided to determine a way to see them one morning later this week. We continued on our way around the coast and ended up stopping for the night in Busselton. We have been warned about driving after dusk as that is when the kangaroos will usually cross the road looking for food (in the cooler parts of the day) and you definitely do not want to hit a kangaroo with your car. It is not any different than hitting a deer with your car and usually both parties lose. We found a nice hotel in town that did not take "schoolies" so it was quiet. Let me remind you that this is "schoolies" week where all of the year 10 and above go on holiday and, like our "spring breaks" can make plenty of noise and sometimes do some damage. A lot of the caravan parks and hostels that we would normally stay in are either very full or will be too rowdy for us. Once settled into our room, with refrigerator and tv, we headed back out for dinner. The hotel manager recommended a local food court in the nearby shopping center where we had a pretty good Chinese dinner. We also stopped to buy some groceries for breakfast and the cashier told us about a place nearby that we could see kangaroos in the wild. Erin ahd only seen the two dead kangaroos that we had passed today on the road so she was excited to see some live ones. We found the dead end street and watched the roos for at least a half hour before returning to our hotel room. The rest of the night was spent in front of the television set. I usually fall asleep first and never know when Erin finally goes to bed. |
