One of our stops along the Bay of Fires. The beaches are of white sand so fine that it sqeaks when you walk. |
Glenn's Journals 12-16-02 Tasmania Today we will check out the Bay of Fires before making our way to Cole's Bay heading south down the coast. We had a better view of St Helen's bay this morning even though it was a little overcast. The view is spectacular form the living room and master bedroom of the house. After a relaxing breakfast and closing up the house we took off heading north to the Bay of Fires. The Bay of Fires so aptly named due to the founding sailors seeing aboriginal fires all along the coast. The long white sandy beaches with the aqua blue waters breaking on the shore are amazing. On a clear day you could probably see forever. The sand was so granular that it squeaked with every step you took and the waters so blue that you could easily see the bottom of the ocean for a distance. We only spent a few hours here mostly due to the overcast skies. We then found our way south towards Cole's Bay when we stopped at Denison's beach for lunch. The skies had cleared and the sun was shining brightly so we spent almost 3 hours relaxing on the beach reading our books and napping in the sun. We continued our travels around 4:00 pm and arrived around 4:30 pm to the caravan park at Cole's Bay to check for accomodation. We also checked to see if our Swiss friends had checked in as well. Our friends ahd not checked in and the park did not have any more cabins available. The manager suggeested that we share the cabin with our friends if possible. We said we would and spent another hour at the nearby beach enjoying more of the sun and the day while waiting for our friends to return. We returned to the caravan park around 6:00 pm to learn that our friends had arrived and had agreed to allow us to share their cabin. The park manager had already split the bill for us. We were again very lucky and appreciative that our friends allowed us to share. The cabin had seperate bedroom areas so they took the double and we took the other end of the cabin with the single beds. The cabin included a kitchen, full bathroom, kitchen table and sitting area overlooking the water. Marcel and Eveline invited us to join them in dinner which was pasta that they would prepare. We were all for that as they had all of the makings for a wonderfull meal. Erin and I returned to the local grocery store and bottle shop for some wine and a few more vegetables for dinner. Marcel and Eveline prepared spaghetti with salads for dinner which we all enjoyed. After dinner Erin taught us how to play Shangai Rummy (her very favorite game now!!) and Marcel and Eveline played along with us. We finished the game around 11:00 pm when we all decided that it was time for bed. It didn't take long for Erin and I to fall alseep tonight. |
