These men from Surry became part of the 18th Reg. of NC troops.  There is little mention of it in the records.  The records state that the 18th Reg. was at Sharpsburg, MD or near Harper's Ferry when they are joined by a "large number of raw recruits from NC." Later it is written that the raw recruits have been supplied with guns. (Clark, Vol. I, pg. 32) This was on the eve of the Battle of Sharpsburg or Antietam.
