Mormon Church Increases Aid to Homeless Shelter (Salt Lake City, Utah)
Yesterday, the LDS church made a $250,000 donation to the Road Home Shelter in Salt Lake City, Utah. In addition, from now on, case workers at the shelter can now provide vouchers for Deseret Industries to the homeless who are ready to move into their own housing. These vouchers can be used to obtain bedding, towels, household utensils, furniture, etc. The homeless can also pick up a two week supply of food from the Bishops' Storehouse. Additionally, the LDS church is providing the use of a truck to help move the homeless to their new homes.

Kirtland Sites to be Dedicated (Kirtland, Ohio)
"A group of restored buildings and sites important to the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Kirtland, Ohio, will be dedicated on May 18, 2003. The dedication will culminate a multiphase restoration project and includes the Newel K. Whitney House, the John Johnson Inn, a sawmill built by early church members, a schoolhouse attended by LDS children and an ashery used to make potash." The Kirtland site is significant as it was a gathering spot for Mormons in the early years of the church. As well, a temple was built there in 1836. (Source: Deseret News)

New Owners of Salt Lake Tribune File Asset-Related Lawsuit (Utah)
"The new owners of the Salt Lake Tribune have filed a federal lawsuit asking a judge to declare that the newspaper's former owners have no individual right to the Tribune's assets. MediaNews Group Inc. and Kearns-Tribune, the newspaper's holding company, filed the suit late Friday against the family that used to control the Tribune." (Source: Deseret News)

- Bruce Smith and wife, Debra-Marie A. Clement
- Jerald L. Wagstaff and wife, Laura F. Seeley

Utah's Marriage Rate is 6th in Nation (Utah)
"Utah ranks sixth in the nation for its marriage rate and 16th for its divorce rate, according to the new 2002 edition of the annual statistical abstract of the United States prepared by the Commerce Department's Census Bureau. The summary shows that in 2002 Utahns married at a rate of 10.6 per 1,000 residents. ....Utah slipped to No. 16 with a divorce rate of 4.4 per every 1,000 residents." (Source: Deseret News)

Covenant Marriage Act Approved by Legislative Review Committee (Utah)
"A bill that would make it harder to marry and divorce — at least, for those willing to take more binding marital vows — was approved unanimously on Valentine's Day by a legislative review committee.....The bill is intended to give new marriages a stronger beginning and a better chance at long-term success." Among other things, couples must attend mandatory premarital counselling and sign a Declaration of Intent. (Source: Deseret News)

Delay in Smallpox Vaccinations (Utah)
Smallpox vaccines that could be used to innoculate the health care workers whom are the first line of defense against a smallpox epidemic in Utah are sitting on the shelf while the state government works out liability issues.
