Cowan History

Samuel COWAN was born sometime in the 1770s in Virginia. He married Sarah KEITH of Bedford County, VA. They had eight children: William, Riley, Samuel C., Margaret, James Harvey, Eli, John Borden, and Stephen. Samuel and Sarah are found in Knox County, Tennessee in 1801 then to Bledsoe Co. by 1806 and by the time Eli is born in 1819 are in Franklin Co., Alabama. In 1825 Stephen is born in Tishomingo Co., Mississippi.

Eli COWAN resided in Tishoming Co, MS for a while marrying Anna E. HAYS there, but the family moves by to Johnson County, Arkansas and is found in the 1850 Census in Piney Twnshp, Ten years later he is in Floyd Twp in the same county. Eli joins the Union side of the Civil War enlisting in a Missouri unit. In 1865, he is in Southwest Missouri, specifically, the town of Bolivar. By 1879, he has moved to Boone County, AR. Eli and Anna have six children, with the next to the youngest being Louis Franklin born in Arkansas 26 Sep 1855.

Louis Franklin COWAN married Mary Jane WILLIAMS born 1854 in Arkansas. Sometime about 1880, Louis and Mary Jane moved to Missouri. They had five children, the oldest being Julia A. born in Pioneer, Barry County, MO.

Julia A. COWAN married 16 June 1901 Charles CRANDALL at her father's house. This marriage is recorded in the Lawrence County courthouse records. Charles was the son of Hampton Lillibridge CRANDALL Louis died in Miami, Oklahoma in 1928 and is buried in Fairview, Newton County, Missouri. Julia and Charles had two children, Minnie and Earl Wiliam. Julia left Charles when Earl was just a baby and went to Joplin, MO. There she remained until her death in 1947. She is buried in Fairview Cemetery in Joplin.
