Scale Models

This was something was into. My interests were autos (passenger/sports, F1, trucks) and motorcycles. Also see the Miniature Miatas page below.

Scale

1/12 Tamiya Suzuki Katana (14010), built for my friend Rene (who owns a 1:1 Suzuki GSX1100S Katana). The yellow AGV Quantum Max Biaggi helmet was also a replica of the ones we both used in real life. This model had a couple of parts from the Custom Tuned kit 14065, namely the 4-into-1 pipe and the oil cooler. This was the first time that I had used Future clearcoat on, and the result was excellent.

1/24 Tamiya Toyota Supra, built for my friend Roger who drove a similar year/color Supra. Picture1 picture2 picture3 picture4.

1/24 Tamiya Fiat 500, built for Rene's friend Dora, sometime in 1999, I think. picture1 picture2

1/24 Tamiya DOME MUGEN NSX, based on the avex DOME MUGEN NSX (kit 24193). Built for my then-girlfriend (now wife), the model was inspired by the video game Tokyo Extreme Racers, where we raced a similar car. Painted Sun Orange Pearl with about an ounce's worth of Future clear coat. Built late Dec 2001.

R/C

This was another hobby that I had for quite some time. I actually started off with a used Kavan Alouette 2 r/c helicopter (.40 engine) that I had purchased back in '83 or '84. I didn't really fly it, except one time where I hovered it 6' in the air and landed (slammed) it back down. Later on, my friend crashed it into a wall accidentally during warmup. I sold it as soon as I got it repaired. Few years later, in 1989, I received a Tamiya Thunder Dragon as a gift from my parents. That was my first "real" r/c car. I still own it - it has been restored to original condition and retired from active running. For a few years I specialized in Tamiya products, and catered to the collectors market (bought / sold kits and parts). Some examples are showcased below.

Tamiya 1/16 King Tiger Production Turret, #56004

I no longer own this tank. I purchased this one used (in excellent condition) and didn't do much with it except I painted the wheels to match the tank. This was the discontinued 4-channel version with muzzle strobe and motorized turret. It was propelled by a single 540 drive motor operating thru a dual clutch mechanism (cannot pirouette). It was the predecessor to the later/simpler 2-channel DMD version (see below).

The treads on these Tigers were plastic and they were prone to breakage. I've successfully repaired many broken links with a soldering iron. There were also aftermarket metal track links available. See here.

Tamiya 1/16 King Tiger Porsche Turret, #56007

I was commissioned to build this one. Tamiya replaced the 'production turret' version with this one, although it was billed as a 'limited release'.

The Porsche Turret version was originally available as a static (display only) model. Tamiya basically fitted it with updated mechanicals used in the re-released Sherman.

This version did not have a muzzle strobe or motorized turret, but the drive system wass more advanced. It was also slightly more expensive. It was controlled by Tamiya's DMD electronic speed control. The DMD controlled dual 380 motors (one for each track) and could do gradual turns as well as pirouettes. It was extremely smooth to operate and was a huge improvement over the old drive system.

Tamiya 1/14 Trucks

Have/had several (Mercedes 1838, 1850, Aeromax), but only have picture of the King Hauler.

Tamiya 1/10 BMW 318i STW (E36)

I was commissioned to build this one also (same customer as above tiger). It was painted Pactra metallic blue, to approximate the real-life M3 exclusive estoril blue color.

HPI Micro RS4 BMW E46 M3

Had to get this shipped in from Japan (was not yet released in the US at the time). Painted Pactra candy apple blue with white pearl undercoat. Should have painted it a darker blue had I known I'd own one later on... It was basically stock, with a homebuilt 7.2V pack for power.

Diecasts

I've collected many miniature Miatas during the time I owned the actual car.

1/18 RX7 and BMW 328i along with customized Matchbox RX7 and Tomica Miata.
Row of
selected diecast models including a 323i in orient blue.
1/24 Danbury Mint James Bond Aston Martin DB5

All pictures taken with a Sony Mavica MVC-FD7 digital camera, hence the crappy picture quality.
