YSR50 FAQ

YSR50 FAQ
Updated 9/4/96

Q: What is a YSR 50?
A: It is a 1/2 size, street legal 50cc two-stroke mini sportbike manufactured by Yamaha and imported into the US from 1987 to 1992.

Q: How fast does it go?
A: A stock bike can top out at around 45 MPH according to Motorcyclist Magazine. Modified bikes can go 60 MPH and up.

Q: How much does it cost?
A: I think it listed for $999 new in 1987, and went up to $1749 in '91 (with full insurance). 1992 w/o insurance is slightly cheaper. Used specimens seem to go for $550 to $1200 and up, depending on year, condition, and modifications.

Q: Are you selling it?
A: No.

Q: Where can I get one?
A: Check local classifieds. If you're in Southern California they seem to be all over the place.

Q: What can I do with one of those?
A: You can ride it on the street, or race it. There are plenty of race organizations for these things. Check Team Calamari's home page (www.teamcalamari.com) for a full listing of clubs and race schedule.

Q: What are some common mods?
A: A pipe, jet and intake kit, sprockets.

Q: What else?
A: 20mm and up carbs, aluminum wheels, aluminum swingarms, aluminum fork brace/triple clamp, clip-ons, better suspension front and back, reed valves, larger front brake, fiberglass bodywork, big-bore (60cc-80cc) kits, or a complete engine transplant. The sky (and your wallet) is the limit.

Q: Where can I get these goodies?
A: One place that specializes in YSRs is Team Calamari Racing, 97 San Benancio Cyn Rd, Salinas, CA 93908, 408-484-1921 (tell'em Ko sent you...) Most of the larger motorcycle mail-order places such as Dennis Kirk, Motorcycle Accessories Warehouse, Chaparral, etc. have accessories for the YSR as well.
