Southern California Club Xterra (SCCX)

About the Club

We are an informal club of Nissan Xterra owners based in and around Southern California.  Membership is open to all owners/drivers/family/friends of Nissan Xterra owners, who reside in the 10 Southern California counties of San Luis Obispo, Kern, San Bernardino, Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Diego, or Imperial.

This club is open to ALL off-road-capable vehicles.  However, please keep in mind that the primary focus is on all things Xterra-related.  If you want to have some outdoor fun with your family and/or friends while learning how to travel on a variety of terrain, then please apply for membership.  Come grow with SCCX as we all learn how much fun the Xterra can be on Xterrain.

SCCX was founded on November 10, 1999, with our first meeting held on December 7, 1999 in a Park-n-Ride parking lot in Los Angeles, near Los Angeles International Airport.  Five Xterra’s showed up, and plans were made for our first “Xcursion,” on January 22, 2000.  Since that first trip, SCCX has made at least one Xcursion every month, as far north as Big Sur and as far south as Anza Borrego, east of San Diego.  SCCX has expanded to more than 30 members.  Although the majority of members drive Xterra’s, membership is open to all off-road-capable trucks and guests/friends are always welcome to join in the fun and ride with the group on Xcursions.  We no longer meet at Park-n-Ride’s, in the belief no one would show up unless we go off-road.  In an attempt to improve the club, this may change in 2001.

In addition to the Xcursions, during 2000, SCCX was fortunate to have been invited by Nissan Design Institute (NDI – the La Jolla design studio where the Xterra was designed) to contribute our thoughts for the next generation of Xterra; we were invited to display our vehicles at the Xterra America Tour in it’s San Dimas event (running, swimming, and mountain-biking); and we had the first annual SCCXmas party, hosted by LAXterra (Cary).  We plan to continue participating in events such as these when they present themselves, and over the next year, plan to add additional social activities, such as picnics, BBQ’s, visits to tourist attractions, and/or theme parks, sporting events, etc., based on interest within the group.  Suggestions for group activities are welcome.

SCCX is unique among most other Xterra clubs, in that we are not exclusively a four-wheel-drive club; rather, SCCX has, and will continue, to encourage 4x2’s to participate.  In fact, we are proud to say that there has been at least one 2WD Xterra on EVERY Xcursion.

As a club, our activities are planned around traveling a variety of trails of varying difficulty throughout diverse Southern California, travelling to points of interest (ghost towns/mines/fire lookout towers/etc.).  In an attempt to satisfy the interests of the greatest number of members, Xcursions will be planned to encompass three levels of difficulty:  Easy, Intermediate, and Advanced.  Please be aware that trail conditions can vary widely, and an ordinarily “easy” trail may become impassable depending on the weather and other conditions beyond our control.  The three levels of trail difficulty are:

Easy:                        These routes can be traversed with a stock Xterra 4x2.  They will include scenic views and vistas or points of interest.  These trails should be of particular interest to the novice or new off-roader.  The primary goals for these Xcursions are to:
1) learn off-road driving techniques;
2) become intimately familiar with the handling and capabilities of your vehicle; and
3) enjoy the great outdoors with a bunch of great people with whom you share a common interest (the Xterra).
Note:  while the main trail will be rated “easy”, there may be side spur trails that are more difficult for those with an adventurous spirit looking for some challenge.

Intermediate:           These routes can be traversed with a stock Xterra 4x2 with rear Limited Slip Differential, or stock Xterra 4x4.  This trail will be more challenging, and there may be sections of the trail where a 4x2 may need assistance (a tow strap).  More experienced members will be there to answer questions, aide and assist.  The primary goals for these Xcursions are to:
1) learn more advanced driving techniques, including how to “pick the right line”;
2) push yourself to “grow”
3) enjoy the great outdoors with a bunch of great people with whom you share a common interest (the Xterra).

Advanced:               These routes are four-wheel-drive-only trails.  Vehicle modifications such as “Boulder Bars/Rock Sliders”, additional skid plates, and taller, more aggressive tires are helpful.  More experienced, advanced-skilled drivers may get away without some of these mods. Vehicle damage is possible, though this depends a lot on the driver’s skill and how extreme he/she gets.  It is important to note that safety is still the PRIMARY consideration.  The primary goals for these Xcursions are to:
1) satisfy the driver who wants to “push the limits of man and machine”;
2) become more familiar with your vehicle than should be legal (caution – your significant-other may become jealous!); and
3) enjoy the great outdoors with a bunch of great people with whom you share a common interest (the Xterra).

Generally, Xcursions are planned/nominated by active members, according to the above levels of difficulty:  We will try to alternate Beginners and Intermediate runs, with an occasional Advanced run thrown in when expected weather and conditions allow.  This is not set in stone, though, and may change based on member input and agreement by the SCCX Board Of Directors.

Through our first fourteen Xcursions, we have had only minor damage to a few vehicles (some “baja pinstriping” (minor scratches from brush, which is easily buffed out), a few minor dents in skid plates and exhaust shielding, a couple plastic corners very slightly modified, and a few bent step rails), and our only injury was one insect sting.
