Some curious facts about these cars
Most of the things you can read here are unknown to most people.
- Guy Fréquelin leaded for a while the 1976 Monte Carlo rally driving a Peugeot 504 Diesel.(Believe it or not, this is true)
- In Sept 1998, a sedan 504 was auctioned in France for just 50 FF (around 8$).The car was complete.
- The Peugeot 504 was first introduced on Sept 12, 1968.
- This car has been made in an extremely wide range of models,
including a sedan, 2 station-wagons (familiale and
commerciale), coupe, convertible (cabriolet),
pick-up and a four-wheel drive ATV (Dangel), and almost all of
them could be either equipped with petrol, Diesel or GLP
engines.
- When the Peugeot 504 Diesel 2.1 litre was first introduced,
at 1970 Paris motor show, it was the most powerful Diesel
powered car in the world. Its XD90 engine delivered 65 DIN bhp.
- These cars won some of the hardest african rallies during
the seventies. Perhaps the most representative was the '75
Safari Rallie, when a 504 TI with 175 bhp and some modification,
driven by Andersson and Hertz was the first car in finishing the
race. Do you know Lancia Stratos? They arrived Later!!
- The XD2S engine that was first mounted on a 604 TD in 1979
was the first turbocharged car Diesel engine in Europe. Peugeot
engineers took a 504 XD2 and added a Garrett-Airesearch
turbocharger. The power grew from 70 to 80 DIN bhp and the torque
grew from 13.4 to 18.8 DIN kg.m.
The "S" in XD2S means suralimenté, turbocharged.
- The first models were equipped with four brake disks and all
independent suspension. In 1973 the 504 L and LD were
introduced. They were the economical models and had rear drums
and a solid rear axle.
- The first injection models had Cibié BI-IODE headlights.
They had two reflectors, ONE INSIDE THE OTHER, in the same
optical unit.
- More than 3,5 million units of Peugeot 504 were made since
1968 to 1988. The car is still made in South America.
