ANNUAL RUN 2000 TO NARO MORU by Jean-Pierre Roquier
On Saturday 28th October, a few Classic cars (Andreas Munden’s
Jaguar XJ6, Alec Davis’ MGB, Gary Farant’s Mercedes 220 and J-P’s
Ford Zodiac), some Alfa Romeos from the Owner’s Club and a few modern
cars gathered at the Mobil petrol station on Limuru road to take part
in the Annual Run. Having been briefed by Pierre Parsons, we set off
in the direction of Naivasha via Limuru. As usual we had to keep
looking out for signs and landmarks to answer a number of questions.
From Delamere farm shop, we headed for Nyahururu via Gilgil. The
second stop and picnic spot was just before Nyahururu town. Suitably
fed and refreshed, we then took the direction of Nyeri, turning off
at the Aberdare Country Club road just after Mweiga, still looking
for clues from road signs and also answering some general knowledge
and motoring questions. When reaching the Nanyuki road, we turned
North towards Naro Moru, where we were booked in the River Lodge. On
this good stretch of road, Gary felt compelled to check the top speed
of his Merc, and I instructed Charles Gitau, who was driving the
Zodiac, to chase him, which the big Ford easily managed, much to the
entertainment of two police officers, who seemed grateful for the
entertaining sight of 2 Classic Cars in action... After that it was
just eat and rest till after Sunday lunch, when we headed back to
Nairobi, at a reasonable pace. No mechanical incidents were reported,
not even a puncture, all cars behaved well, even those made in Italy!
On Saturday evening, Pierre handed in the results. To everybody’s
surprise, the overall winner was J-P’s team in the Zodiac (J-P, Liz,
Charles and his daughter Nyambura). Usually I tend to get carried
away on these events, and after trying a bit, soon forget the
questions and start enjoying the driving. Obviously, being a forced
passenger this year (broken ankle), I had no choice but concentrate
on the questions! Although the turn-out was small, all who
participated had a good time, thank you Pierre and Margaret!

Andreas Munden spent a lot of time restoring this very rusty
Series II Jaguar XJ6, it was its first outing, well done!
More happy picnic participants, this time Pierre and Margaret
