WONDER BOYS
Movie Review

Douglas, when he's not making us wonder
what Catherine Zeta-Jones is thinking, continues to find projects that are both smart and
entertaining--not always an easy combination. Playing a college professor who wrote a
bestseller the first time out, he now faces a bad case of writer's block as well as an
armful of other problems. And Maguire, proving that his recent run in some very good films
is no fluke, is a marvel here, too. Oscar winner McDormand, as Douglas' secret flame, is
excellent, and Downey reminds you how much you'd rather see him in films than the
tabloids. Director Hanson, in his first project since L.A. Confidential, proves
that not only does he know how to tell a good story, he can do it consistently.
