Dave’s Review: The Lavender Hill Mob
Alec Guinness plays the part of a middle-aged man who works as a bank clerk where they make and transport gold bullion. The only problem is he is trapped in this ho-hum job for the past 20 years with nothing to show for his life. He can only dream of making it rich. His waiting pays off when he meets a new tenant from his building, played by Stanley Holloway, who makes and sells souvenirs. He gets the idea of stealing the gold bullion by having them made into the shape of Eiffel towers. The two of them hire a couple of thugs to help them with their scheme. Things get out of hand when Holloway is mistaken for shoplifting a piece of street art which ironically is worthless. And this starts the ball rolling. The so-called well thought out plan starts to fall apart, so the boys have to fall back on their second plan, run!! This plan seems to work better and makes for better comedy.
Overall I wouldn’t say this was a great movie. There were too many things I disliked about this movie. Here are some of them:
Dislikes:
I don’t generally like to concentrate so hard to understand what they are saying. (I wish they would speak English!).
After watching the well-plotted heist in The Asphalt Jungle, I would say this heist wasn’t thought out at all.
The picking of the two thugs was a joke. Why would you want stupid crooks that are so easily caught by Guinness and Holloway?
The bumbling policemen who can’t catch Guinness and Holloway while they grab a gold Eiffel tower right in front of them and make a run for it. Some might say this is British humor but I say it’s very unlikely. They looked like the keystone cops going after them.
The Likes:
I liked the idea of this Mr. Nobody finally getting enough guts to go for his dream.
I liked it where the French delayed them when they were trying to get on the ship.
I liked the floating hat and coat. I’m not sure I know what it means, but I liked it.
I also liked the soundtrack. "Old McDonald" was always one of my favorites.
Overall I didn’t find this comedy real funny. I think the only time I even smiled was when the radio was playing "Old McDonald"(Squeal like a pig!).
I give this movie a 2.5 out of 5 stars.
