Antonio Salieri: Auxr Finale | ||||||

Ah, finally Salieri gets his turn! There may have been a great rivalry between Mozart and Salieri as shown in Amadeus, but there was no competition. Though Salieri was the most powerful composer in Europe, his works were no comparison to Mozart's. He was not, however, the mediocrity he mourned himself to be. This finale of one of his opera's is strong and brute, with a few area's where we see a problem that apears in almost none of Mozart's work-clashing. The voices and the music don't seem to work, like they're fighting each other. And while Mozart's work may be a tad too long, Salieri's is much to short. Salieri is now forgotten, but in his day, Emperor Joseph II loved him. Partly because of the fact his opera's WERE short (In a famous conversation between Mozart and the Emperor, Joseph II remarks that Mozart's opera The Abduction from the Seraglio had "too many notes" to which Mozart replied "Just as many as I require" This charming little exchange was worked into Amadeus) Vienna loved him because his opera's weren't new. The public liked the way he wrote music, because they knew what to expect. In a funny scene from Amadeus, Mozart laments the failing of Le Nozze Di Figaro, and Salieri offers him some help. His advice? First off, for the Emperor, "You make too many demands on the royal ear. The poor man can't concentrate for more then an hour, you gave him four!" Of course, this is reference to the fact that poor Salieri can't write anything longer than an hour. Salieri goes on to say that "You overestimate our dear Viennese my friend, did you know you didn't even give them a good bang at the end of songs to let them know when to clap ?" Mozart paces across the room, wine in hand, and replies" I know! I know! Maybe you should give me some lessons in that!" And of course, the thought of Salieri giving Mozart lessons is laughable. All in all, Salieri was a bit higher than a mediocrity, but he was no real competition to Wolfi. |
