This crazy film is one of my all time favorites, screw the fact that it's for kids! The zany tale of a reclusive but brilliant candy maker who gives five lucky children a tour of his factory. The story is infamous and nearly every person in America knows it, so do I really need to go into detail? The scenes are mostly brilliant, the songs are delightful and catchy, and for the most part the acting is perfect. The children do get a bit annoying though and when each one of them meets a not too favorable fate, you're almost relieved that they've shut up. Charlie is good, but his old "I'm poor but nice, and I hope the kind candy man will come and take me away from my crappy life" routine is more than a little tiresome. The other children, a brat (that you just want to kick in the shins everytime she speaks), the tv addict, the gum lover, and the fat boy, are all trying to teach you a lesson. And those would be, don't be a bitch, don't eat to much, don't watch too much tv, and . . . don't chew too much gum? Honestly has this ever been a real problem? I don't know anyone who chews this much gum, whereas I know several people who are that addicted to the tv or eat that much, but was gum chewing a major issue? Anyway, it doesn't matter because they all get a fate they deserved, though Willy Wonka is quick to point out that they will all be okay. Yeah right you crazy candy guy, you're making them all into chocolate right now aren't you? Ah well, who cares? I'd be just as happy to see them die, but then they mostly annoyed the hell out of me. No matter, all is forgiven the moment Gene Wilder steps on camera. As the crazy and very strange Willy Wonka, Gene will keep you wondering what his true intentions are. From the first scene where Wonka steps out of the factory, limping then does a sumersault (A stunt that was Gene's idea) we know that Willy Wonka lies and decieves, so he keeps us on our feet. Gene Wilder is perfect in this role, a fact he proves in each frame. His witty commets and sarcastic nature, create an enjoyably odd, yet trustworthy character. The film takes on a darker sense though, which is what is so cool about it. It's mean spirited and insane, and occasionally disturbing, yet is meant for kids and shows a distorted view of a child's fantasy. What kid wouldn't love to take a tour of a candy factory, but what kid would want to be made into a giant blueberry? This is half the fact that I love this film so much, it's not all happy and joyous, it's part light kid's film, part black comedy. I half expected Willy Wonka to pull a machine gun and kill em' all off at one point. There was even a scene that scared me. Wonderful, now I'll be called a pussy right? Well I don't care, the scene where they are in the row boat was freaky. And as long as we are on the topic of freaky, I found Gene Wilder attractive in this movie. There. I said it. No, I'm not kidding. I found Willy Wonka attractive. ARGGHH! Now I'll be known as the pussy with bad taste. |

Best scene: The Pure Imagination song, and the scene it's sung in where they discover the chocolate room, is brilliant. Go ahead, just try watching it and not getting hunrgy, I dare you! And, Gene proves that he's just as good a singer as he is an actor, which is saying something.

I don't care what anyone says, this was a freaky scene!
"Are the fires of hell glowing?! Is the grisly reaper mowing?! Yes! The danger must be growing, because the rowers keep on rowing! AND THEY'RE CERTAINLY NOT SHOWING ANY SIGNS THAT THEY ARE SLOWING!"
