"Captain . . . we are being watched." "Intuition?" "No sir, we are being watched."
Kirk: He's assigned to find out whats killing off the men, comes face to face with the creature in a most unpleasent situation. Spock: Performs probably the biggest help by 1.) Suggesting that it's a silicon based lifeform. 2.) Suggesting the silicon nodules are important. and 3.) Risking his life to perform a Vulcan Mind Meld with the creature. Despite all of this, Kirk still manages to take the credit. McCoy: "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!" (Hehehehe!) Scotty: Tries to save them by creating a make-shift pump or something. Whatever, it breaks anyway. Anybody we see standing alone that we haven't grown attached to: Burned to a crisp. Horta: A silicon based lifeform that tunnels through rock easily. |

Characters of signifigance:
Basically, people are being killed in an underground Pergium mine and the Cheif calls Kirk to come and stop the creature that's responsible. Spock suggests that whatever is doing the killing must have a reason but, as usual, his comments are ignored and the men set out to kill using brute force. The creature steals a vital pump and the entire colony will either be poisened with radiation or suffocate from failing life support. Kirk and Spock race to find the creature, but what will they do when they find it? Spock pleads that it may be the last of it's kind, again, he is ignored and Kirk tells the men to shoot to kill. I like this episode, it's powerful and deeply ironic. Leonard Nimoy (Spock) said it best in his book, "The theme is a powerful ond, dealing with racism and intercultural conflict-the fear of the person or thing that we don't know and don't understand. 'The Devil in the Dark' illustrates beautifully how unreasoning fear begets violence-and how an attempt at understanding can benefit both sides in a conflict. Would that it could be accomplished so readily in real life!" Mr. Nimoy makes perfect sense to me, and all one has to do is watch his amazing mind meld with the creature to understand that this episode goes far deeper then mere entertainment, it tackles world issues. |

Quick Plot | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
*Telling someone they're going to'be okay' is pretty much a death-wish. *There's nothing scarier than a man under a rug. *Deep down, under it all, McCoy is really a bricklayer at heart. *Horta's find Vulcan ears attractive. *When something is coming after you, the best thing to do would be to just stand in one place and scream. *A creature the size of a small table can burn a tunnel in solid rock two times it's size without moving. *Perfectly round silicon nodules are 'just rocks' |

Things I learned from The Devil in the Dark:
1:01-I know this was filmed in the 60's but really, the background is clearly a drawing. 2:20-Oh you are so dead. 4:14-Why do they keep using that same bad drawing? 4:25-Again, Kirk is investigating the death of fifty men, so he beams down with his two most valuble crew members and no security gaurds. 9:02-You're meat. 9:44-Hey, there's that exact same drawing again. . . 16:49-Why Kirk and Spock, the two most important people on the Enterprise, are searching for a known killer together is beyond me. 19:13-Oh my God, it's a man under a rug! 25:29-A phaser won't hurt it, so this genius is going to use a club? 35:19-It's odd that the Horta writes that in English and not Vulcan since it mind melded with Spock . . . |

Things to watch for: | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Spock: The odds against both of us being killed are 2,228.7 to 1. Kirk: 2,228.7 to 1? Those are pretty good odds. Spock: And they are, of course, accurate. Kirk: Of course. Kirk: That's not necessary Mr. Spock, I know exactly where the creature is. Spock: Where? Kirk: Ten feet in front of me. Spock: (In the mind meld) The end of life . . . eternity stops . . go out into the tunnel to the chamber of the ages . . . cry for the children. Spock: Curious, what Cheif Vanderberg said about the Horta is exactly what the mother Horta said to me. She found human apperance revolting, but she thought she could get used to it. McCoy: Oh she did, did she? Tell me, did she happen to make any comment about those ears? Spock: Not specificically, but I got the distinct impression that she found them the most attractive human characteristic. I couldn't bear to tell her only I had them. |
