Buskatiers do the CMS MoKanStateline 150 Mile Adventure Rally
It was by far the coldest day of the week - and we wouldn't have it any other way. Watching the weather during the week, I noticed the threat of snow looming around our Saturday. The day before was clear, sunny, and in the 40s - a comparatively warm day. Saturday rolls in with a cold windy front, creating conditions to test only the true, hardened VW veterans to come out. Matt Ramsey and I rolled into City Market, shook off the cold, and noticed an early bay window bus already there before us. We discussed if we recognized the bus, noticed a little dog in the back, and figured it was a worker's at the market. We proceeded to the meeting area and kept warm as Mike and Becki of the MoKan VW Club showed up. I was glad to see them, as this confirmed that the word made it out to the MoKan folks. Then Rick, Marty, Pink, and Bill pulled in and formed up. Then the mystery bay from the market joined in, and we find out that the couple is new in town from Georgia, and didn't want to miss a beat in the local VW scene. Shortly afterwards, Glen and Mike (of VeeVillage fame) arrived. Still waiting for Mark and Gary - almost 9 o'clock, hope the splitty didn't crap out on them. They show up just as we try calling them, and the briefing begins. Maps, decals, and magnets are distributed, at which time I realize Rick wasn't staying focused during the brief - he ain't going to make it. We rally up and we're off to the various pit stops - Are We Not Men?
Our
secret weapon against the cold - known to some as a cab divider, we like to
refer to it affectionately as a "Heat Retaining Wall", since the Kombi
only has the heat outlets up front.
Minutes:

1230hrs - Buskatiers proceed into St Joseph, MO along winding trafficway system.
1300hrs - Buskatiers invade occupy by force, Krug Park, St Joseph, MO.
1320hrs - Buskatiers conduct river crossing and proceed into Kansas where Matt takes the lead through Troy and into Atchison.
1350hrs - Buskatiers arrive in Atchison, KS and comb the area for food
1400hrs - The only thing that can stop us now is hunger. Buskatiers identify and occupy local riverfront cafe, where the fare is deemed suitable for our consumption by Matt.
1500hrs - Bill and Bill Sr. split to prep and heat up the shop and shortly afterwards we're off to the MoKan Tech session organized by Wendy and Rick. We linked up with Bryant down at the bottom of the loop and Pink leads us to the last leg of the run to the Tech Session. The Tech Session was pretty cool. Rick has these cool old Official VW Training films, that consist of slides and LP record soundtracks. We reviewed one on Pre-delivery Inspections (done on a cool '69 (?) Beetle), one on all VW Solex Carburetors - how they work and model differences, and one on the Changes for 1975 VWs.
All in all a successful run, with no breakdowns, no one got lost, and most of all, no frostbite. Note: Rick made it afterall, despite his lack of focus during the driver's briefing, his innate homing ability kept him on track ( or was it the fact that it was a follow the leader operation?) ; )
