"fire fire, bring him down!"

this is the spot, they whisper with feeling
where science began, with the act of stealing
the fire from heaven, that proved progress,
was leaving the gods, mankind, its egress.

this is the slope, the signs all say
where he first ran down, oh fateful day!
that dawned so bright, false with cheer
saying 'with knowledge, there is nothing to fear'.

this is the mound, now covered with grass
a pile of rocks, they threw on this ass
not the gods, outraged as they were
but the people he had tried to help, oh dear!

this is the moral, you should take
that when helping others, for goodness' sake
regret and pain is all you'll reap
for people are wolves, in clothes of sheep

this is the tale they tell to me
and as I nod my head, sagefully
I realize that with any gift, a price is paid
he taught us "fire", and we blew him away.
