Narration
First draft plan
- Purpose of narration : to tell the reader what happened in a specific situation. You should use the narration to recount events, tell a story or make a point.
- Context : to determine when the action took place, where and to whom.
- Point of view : first person point of view if the narrator took part in the action (immediate and subjective) or third person point of view (distanced and objective) if the narrator was told or was a witness. After making your choice, stick to it throughout the text.
- Selection of events and details : should include enough events and details to help the reader understand what’s going on. Emphasis should be put on details/events that carry the point you want to make.
- Organization : tell the story in a chronological sequence, from beginning to end. To vary, start the story midway through with a very important event and work your way back using flashbacks.
- Verb tense : use the past tense since your purpose is to recount events that took place in the past. The present tense is used more to create an effect of intense immediacy.
