Solve the following problems using the standard problem solving procedures. Solve the problems on a separate sheet of paper and place the answers on the original page in the margin. Watch units, sig digs, and direction!
Example: The pressure exerted
on Super Andersons head under normal conditions is 1.0 atm. The volume of her head is 1.63 Liters. If the pressure is changed to 100.0 atm what
will Super Anderson head size be?
1.
If we__________________ the
volume of a balloon we decrease the pressure the gas exerts.
2. If we decrease the volume of a balloon we
______________ the pressure the gas exerts.
3. These are
both _______________ relationships.
4. The Mahlum-in-ator’s first order of business was to
escape from the clutches of the one known as Super Anderson. Knowing that Super Anderson does not have
any super powers of her own and must rely on clever weapons, country music and
Smiley gas. The EVIL ONE calls upon his
super powers of atmospheric control and begins to increase the pressure in the
room. The original volume of the room
was 152.0 L and the pressure was at 1.00 atm.
The Mahlum-in-ator increases the pressure to 64.32 atm. What will happen to the smiley gas and what
will its new volume be?
5. The Smiley gas begins to decrease in volume, the
Mahlum-in-ator is able to think clearly, and resume his evil ways. The Mahlum-in-ator quickly formulates an
escape plan. If the smiley gas can be
decreased in size to fit into a two liter bottle he could use the bottle that
is sitting in the corner to capture the gas. (Super Anderson always leaves
stuff lying around, she never picks up after herself). What is the final pressure needed to reduce
all 152.0 L of Smiley gas so that it will fit into a 2.00 liter bottle.
(regular atm is 1.00)
6. Once the gas has been captured the Mahlum-in-ator
realizes that if the contents of the gas were exposed to the music of
GODSMACK!! Its molecular structure would change and it would become EVIL GAS OF
DEATH AND DESTRUCTION. Unfortunately,
this change in molecular structure would also result in a sudden change in
volume. If the 2.00 liter bottle can
handle a maximum volume change of .500 liters before exploding. By how much will the pressure change inside
the bottle? (You will need to use your
results from number five in this problem)
The
bottle was cleverly placed by the door; speakers were fashioned using a few
paperclips, tape, and an old straw hat.
The speakers were connected to the Mahlum-in-ator’s Walkman (I never
leave home without it) and within seconds KABOOM!!! The exploding 2-liter
bottle blasted the door open. The
Mahlum-in-ator was free to battle once again.

Example: Super Anderson is in
a room at the following temperature 293.6 K.
The volume of her head is 1.63 L.
What will the size of her head be if the temperature is changed to 351
k?
