Honors
Physical Science
Mr. Mahlum
Physical Science Portfolio Guideline
Over the course of the semester,
you will be required to create a science portfolio that documents your academic
progress. It is important that you read
and understand the guidelines for the portfolio at the beginning of the
semester. The portfolio is a long-term
project. You will create your portfolio
gradually, adding to it as components are completed. When finished, the portfolio will provide an overall assessment
of your comprehension of physical science and scholastic growth. The portfolio will be worth approximately
12% of your semester grade in physical science.
Format: All work must
be typed and spell-checked. Format
should be double spaced with top and bottom margins of 1 inch and side margins
of 1.25 inches. Font and letter size
should be similar to that used in physical science handouts.
(e.g. Times New Roman--12 point)
Cover: 3-ring
binder (2” D-ring style suggested)
Cover Page: Name
Semester
Date
Class
Period
Table of
Contents:
The
introduction, physical science concepts, inclusions and written conclusion
should be referenced in the table of contents.
Introduction:
This is an overview
of the semester. It should describe the general themes and focus of the class,
and discuss why science is important.
Physical Science
Concepts: The top three
science concepts you have identified from the semester.
The three web pages you submitted for review and summary
List
the titles of the three video submissions and a brief summary of the video.
Inclusions:
Tests &
Quizzes
Laboratory
Reports & Labs
Homework
Conclusion:
This is a final
self-assessment of your performance in Physical Science. It also outlines your goals for the future.
Don't be afraid to emphasize the positive nature of your work, but be realistic
in your outlook.
Length: Length requirements will be
strictly enforced. Do not attempt to
meet the requirements by using inappropriate fonts, letter sizes, margins, or
spacing.
Additional
Items: You may include any additional items
at the end of your portfolio. Some
possible items may be:
Extra Credit Assignments Humorous
anecdotes
Drawings, sketches or other artwork Comments
Evaluation of
the Physical Science Portfolio
Directions:
The guidelines below
indicate how the grade for your portfolio will be determined. The bold
print identifies major points. Use the guidelines to help you earn your
desired grade. You, your parent, and a classmate will evaluate your portfolio. (In some cases a teacher will check your
portfolio to make sure that some items are included.)

*includes
references
to scientific investigators, major discoveries, and important mathematical
equations *(this may or may not be relevant for the topic)

summarized in at least ½ of a page. No
grammatical or spelling errors are present.
The topic must include the explain, discuss, and illustrate sections.
6 As in 7; however, a few
grammatical or spelling errors were present.
5
Each concept is briefly summarized. One of the following sections explain,
discuss, or illustrate is not included in the writing.
4 Each concept is briefly
summarized. Two of the following
sections explain, discuss, or illustrate is not included in the writing.
0
There are no physical science concepts included.
10
The student has submitted for review three websites that
relate to the topic of discussion in physical science
A ½ page
summary of each website is included that:
-
explains why the
website was submitted. What made you
choose this website over others you have found. (at least one well constructed
paragraph)
