COUSIN EDDIE
2007
You may
have seen my original travel page, featuring our adventures driving Rocinante,
the camper pictured above.
When I
first brought this baby home, just after I retired from Teaching, I was greeted
by my friend, Gary, who said, “Cousin Eddie!
Welcome to my home,” in reference to the wonderful character played by
Randy Quaid in those great National
Lampoon Vacation films. The name
stuck and I kept track of all our adventures in diary form in a webpage you can
see by clicking here.
Well,
times have changed. This year, we traded
in the beloved but constantly breaking down camper you see above and bought a
new one. Here it is, sitting in front of our house in

this new camper will mean no more breakdowns, no more terrible disasters, just
a few more adventures and pictures from travel places all over the
This time, we expect no disasters. As we travel, we’ll post stories and pictures
on this site, as we did in the previous one.
Day One: I just
parked the camper in front of the house so we can start packing things up—all
my DVD’s and electronic toys, the new laptop I’m writing on right now, a
printer, etc. As it was about 90 degrees
outside, I decided we needed to put the air conditioner on, so I plugged it via
an extension cord to the house electric.
As I walked around the front of the camper to connect the wire, my eyes
focused on the wire itself to be sure it wasn’t tangled. WHAM!
I didn’t see the left side mirror
until it was too late. I smashed my head
into it and dropped to my knees in pain.
What can I say?
A brand new camper is not a guarantee against stupidity. Maybe this year’s adventures will turn out to
be more of the same. Maybe acting like
