Settles v. Signal Hill, USDC No. 81-6437-FW (Co-counsel with Johnnie
L. Cochran, Jr.) Represented surviving mother and father of Ron Settles,
California State Long Beach football player, who died June 2, 1981, in
Signal Hill, CA jail. Nine day coroner's inquest resulted in jury verdict
that Settles' death was "at the hands of another, other than by accident."
Section 1983 action, actively pretried for one year, settled January 27,
1983.
Ford v. Los Angeles, USDC 76-2074-LEW Section 1983 action against
Los Angeles and four police officers who choked 28-year-old black male
to death with a stranglehold. Settled on the eve of trial.
Wright v. Los Angeles, USDC 81-0750-MR (Co-counsel with Joel DuBoff
of the Maryland Bar) Section 1983 action by survivors of 36-year-old black
male choked to death by off-duty LAPD officer-security guard. District
court dismissed federal claims and City. 28 U.S.C. Section 1292(b) petition
denied. Appeal decided (9th Cir., 1986) 792 F.2d 145 (Table: ordered not
published), partially reversing by re-instating City defendant (negligent
training) and remanding for trial of state causes of action only. Settled.
McNeil v. Los Angeles, USDC 82-3134-RG (Co-counsel with Johnnie
L. Cochran, Jr.) Section 1983 action by survivors of 40-year-old black
male misdemeanant choked to death by Los Angeles police officers. Fully
pretried. Set- tled.
Mincey v. Los Angeles, USDC 82-5023-RMT (Co-counsel with Johnnie
L. Cochran, Jr.) Section 1983 action by survivors of a 20-year-old black
male traffic violator choked to death by Los Angeles police officers. Fully
pretried. Settled.
Acree v. Los Angeles, USDC 83-2713-AHS (Co-counsel with Peter Williamson)
Section 1983 action by survivors of 21-year-old choked to death by Los
Angeles police officer. Fully pretried. Settled.
Maddox v. Los Angeles, USDC 83-1963-HLH (Co-counsel with Barry Frederick)
Section 1983 action by survivors of a 36-year-old black choked to death
by Los Angeles police officer. Defense verdict in February, 1985 after
8-day jury trial. Unsuccessfully appealed Maddox v. Los Angeles
(9th Cir., 1986) 792 F2d 1408, 21Fed. R. Evid Serv. 20.
Guevara v. Los Angeles, USDC 84-0560-RG (Co-counsel with Steve Heller)
Section 1983 action by survivors of 31-year-old Latin male choked to death
by Los Angeles City jail personnel. Fully pretried. Settled.
