Biome / Biogeoclimatic Zone Poster Assignment

CNBMS Grade 7 Science Mr. Banser

You will be working in partners on a biome, or biogeoclimatic zone poster which you will display and orally present to the class.  This is a library and internet research project that will allow you to gain valuable information to present to the class in written and picture form about your chosen zone. This projects totals 155 marks plus daily 5 point evaluation. Evaluation and weighting information will follow.

A. The zones you will be able to choose from are:

1.) Biomes: Arctic Tundra, Taiga, Deciduous forest, Grassland, Rainforest (tropical/ temperate), Desert

2.) Climatic Zones in Canada: Pacific Coast, Interior Mountains, Prairie, Canadian Shield, Great Lakes

Arctic Tundra (specifically Canada), Taiga, Maritime.

B) Choosing Zones for research

Names will be drawn and you and your partner will choose one of these zones.  Only one group per topic in each class.  You will be able to choose a partner- be sure to choose wisely, choose someone that you will be able to work with, as this is a MAJOR assignment.  Once you have chosen your partner you will review the choices of zones you have.  Write down your first, second, and third choice since you may not get your first choice due to your draw position.

                        a.) Introduction to assignment

                        b.) Research worksheet

c.) Example layout of poster ( I will show you some completed ones from last year!)

d.) Criteria for poster and presentation

                        e.) peer evaluation form

                        f.) self-evaluation form

2.) Additional materials you will need to bring. I have some, but not enough so please be prepared!

a.) gluestick     c.) ruler     b.) scissors                d.) pencil crayons and felts       e.) a pencil and pen

E.      Research:

Remember to cite the source of where you found the information. Try to take major facts and put them together in sentences explaining in your own words. Not paragraphs copied exactly from the source!! This is plagerism and will result in a fail.

Once you and your partner have chosen a topic, write it down in the space provided on your Research Facts Worksheet.  During the next two – three periods you will be researching your topic in the computer lab from the internet as well as using the library and other print materials provided.  You need to fill in your work sheet- it will be worth 5 daily participation marks, so come prepared to work, and bring a pen or pencil to write the information you find on your sheet.   Here are some useful websites to help get you started. Also use key word searches within search engines or indices.

F.      Poster Board:

Once you and your partner have completed your research facts worksheet you need to plan your poster setup.  Draw a rough copy of the layout you wish to use on a sheet of paper.  You do NOT have to use the layout that I have given you on the handout, it is only one way that you could plan your poster.  I gave the handout to give you ideas so you will be able to get started more easily.  You can use whatever layout you wish as long as all the elements you need are included.

Your poster needs to have a:

à        Title – The name of your zone

à        map showing the areas where your zone is – photocopied or hand drawn

à        general information and description of your zone – complete sentence form

à        climate and weather – complete sentence form

à        vegetation types – complete sentence form

à        types of animals– complete sentence form

à        a picture and detailed description of one type of vegetation found in your zone

à        a picture and detailed description of one animal found in your zone

Once you have completed your rough copy show it to me and I will give you your poster board so you can get started on your poster.

G.      Poster and Signing Up for a Presentation:

Check the date that your class is scheduled to present you posters.  You and your partner will need to have your poster and your 2-4 minute presentation ready for this day.  Be sure to review the criteria so you will know what you are expected to do.  You will have 2 classes after research days to work on your poster.  Your poster will be for homework if you do not finish in this time.  I will be in the classroom at lunch and after school if you want to work on your poster at these times.  Be sure to bring your felts and/or pencil crayons, scissors, gluesticks, and rulers to class on April 15 th and onward.  You can bring photos out of magazines, or off the computer if you like.  You will be marked for your classroom work and partner participation on these days.

H.      Presentation:

On the day you present you will need to show your completed poster to the class and tell them briefly about your zone as well as the plant and animal you chose that lives in the zone you chose.  The presentation should be 2-4 minutes long.  You will be marked on a 5 point scale for your presentation (see the criteria sheet) and you will be given a mark for your audience manners as well.

On April 21st or 22nd you also need to complete the peer and self-evaluation forms.  THESE ARE CONFIDENTIAL AND NOT TO BE DISCUSSED WITH YOUR PARTNER!

The back of your poster needs to have the following sheets glued to it (see the poster layout handout), so bring your gluesticks on this day.

à        Names of partnership (first and last names)

à        Research worksheet – facts sheets  (staple together and glue back page on)

à        poster criteria sheet - just one

à        peer evaluations – to be given to me after presentation (not glued on back)

à        self evaluations – glued on back
