TERMS:
BACKBOARD: The vertical plane to which the basket is attached.
BALL HANDLING: The skill of controlling the ball in all situations.
BASELINE: The boundaries of the basketball court at either end.
BASIC ATHLETIC POSITION: Knees flexed, back straight. Feet slightly wider
than shoulder width. Chin over the toes.
DRIBBLE: A method of moving the ball by bouncing it while running.
FIELD GOAL: Any successful shot taken from the playing area while the clock is running.
Value is two points.
FOUL: An infraction of the rules usually in the area of excessive contact.
FREE THROW: A shot resulting from a foul which gives a player an un-obstructed shot from the
free throw line. Value is one point.
JUMP BALL: A contest in which the ball is tossed between two players to a point higher than
either can jump. The players attempt to tip the ball to team mates waiting outside the
jump circle.
KEY: The restricted area bounded by the free throw line, base-line and the two lines which
connect them. An offensive player may remain in the key for only three seconds.
LAY UP SHOT: A short shot taken very close to the basket after taking 2 steps.
MID COURT LINE: This line divides the playing area in half.
PIVOT: An offensive movement in which the player who has the ball keeps one foot anchored in
position and moves the other foot so as to create a better passing angle or to protect the
ball from an opponent.
REBOUND: A missed field goal attempt.
TWO-TO-MAKE - TWO: A player fouled in the act of shooting whose field goal attempt is
unsuccessful is given two opportunities to score two free throws.
VIOLATIONS: (Other team gets the ball on the side)
A) TRAVELLING: Lifting or dragging the pivot foot before passing, shooting or dribbling.
B) DOUBLE DRIBBLE: Dribbling with two hands or allowing the ball to come to rest on one or both hands after dribbling, and then resuming dribbling.
C) 3 SECOND VIOLATION: Remaining in the opponent’s key for 3 consecutive seconds and a shot has not been taken.
D) 5 SECOND VIOLATION: Occurs when a closely guarded player who is holding the ball does not advance it for 5 seconds. The defensive team gets the ball on the side.
OFFENSIVE
FOULS (fouls made when you or your team are in possession of the ball)
1. CHARGING: is the type of contact caused by the forward movement of a player who has just taken a shot at the basket and does not try to avoid his opponent.
2. THE CHARGING DRIVE - consists of the dribbler causing contact with an opponent situated in his path or trying to drive between two defenders when has no room to do so.
NOTE: - if a foul is committed on a player who is NOT in the act of shooting, the ball shall be put in play by the non—offending team from out-of-bounds on the side line nearest the place the foul occurred.
* if a foul is committed on a player who is “in the act of shooting”
if the goal is made, it shall count, and, in addition, one free throw shall be awarded
if the goal is missed, three free throws shall be awarded to make 2 pts.
FIFTH FOUL: after 5 personal fouls, a player is expelled from the game and a substitute may take his/her place.
JUMP BALL: - starts every period
- when 2 opponents hold ball for 5 seconds
- after a double foul
- when referee is unsure who put ball out—of—bounds
