From Deserts to ForestsB.C.’s Biogeoclimatic Zones

Ø      Biome – A large region that has a certain make up of soil, plants, animal, and climate. Example: Desert, Arctic Tundra, Tropical Rain Forest.

Ø      Biogeoclimatic Zone – Smaller areas with specific and or unique plant growth, soil, climate, and animals.  Things such as mountain, valleys, coastlines and islands break larger Biomes into smaller regions called biogeoclimatic zones. B.C. has between 9 and 14 of these smaller unique zones (depending on what literature you read. BC forest service has mapped out 14, while our text and other literature talks of only 9 or 10.)

Task: Mini – research/mapping and presentation of facts and information regarding B.C.’s Biogeoclimatic Zones.

Research and create a mapping / written project displaying B.C’s biogeoclimatic zone locations and list the varieties of different plants, climate, soil types, and other interesting information on each zone.

Materials Required:

Procedure:

You will be provided with two (possibly three) class periods to read/research the information provided and to create maps of BC’s biogeoclimatic zones, geographic regions, and to provide key written information (facts) on each zones climate, land type, main city or towns.

Steps:

1)      Use a map outline of B.C and page 64 in the Sc. Probe text to create, colour code and label the 5 geographic zones in B.C. Colour/shade in dark. Label in black to stand out, or create a key/legend.  Title is:  B.C.’s Geographical Regions

2)      Use a piece of tracing paper to trace the B.C. outline and add the 9 biogeoclimatic zone locations to the BC map outline as a layover. Complete using the Discover Magazine pages and maps provided. Colour/ shade in lightly. Create a key/legend to provide name information. Title is:   B.C.’s Biogeoclimatic Zones

**NOTE: You do not need to add “Northeast Pacific” as this is an ocean focus to the west of BC.

3)      Use the Atlas of Canada to and new piece of tracing paper to mark and label the locations of the main towns/cities listed in the Discover Magazine for each zone. Use a dark, small circle and write name correctly. Title this : Major Towns in B.C.’s Zones.

4)      Use lined paper to write the Names of each of the Biogeoclimatic Zones and list the written information needed. This would include the sub titles and information for: Climate, Land Type, and any other 3 main interesting points found on the zone pages in Discover Science Magazine.

Example:

Biogeoclimatic Zone Facts and Information

Northern Boreal Mountains:

Climate – dry summers, and long arctic winters.

Land – Mountains, plateaus, wide valleys and lowlands.

Fast Facts:

5)      When all steps are covered above, go through them one more time, checking to make sure all criteria is followed carefully. Line papers up in the following way and staple the top left corner together.

Bottom to top

Written Information and Facts of each Biogeoclimatic Zone (on lined papers)

B.C.’s Geographical Zones Map

B.C.’s main towns or cities map layover

B.C.’s Biogeoclimatic Zones Map and legend Layover

6)      Write your name, date, and block on the front of the top paper and hand in to Mr. Banser for evaluation.

Evaluation:

·        All steps have been completed satisfactorily. No main pages missing!

·        Neatness, colour, and completeness of overall presentation

·        Titles, and sub-titles for organization and information

·        Accuracy and completion of all 3 maps

·        Class time used appropriately and wisely /assignment is on time.

·        Information that has been typed or neatly written or printed in blue or black pen

·        Legends are titled, colour coded and relate directly to to map information provided.

·        Name, date, and block written clearly on front page

·        All pages follow the correct order provided, discussed and demonstrated in class

5- All criteria steps completed in an excellent and outstanding way. A lot of care put into assignment!! Way to go!

4- Very good. A few minor errors or steps missing or unclear. Astrong job, well done!

3- Satisfactory/Good- some key elements of the criteria are missing or not fully completed. You need to double check

2 -Needs Improvement- many elements of criteria are missing or not complete. Much more care required!

1 -Not completed/Incomplete (redo)
