Assignment: Creating a Map using the Internet

 

Great Aunt Frieda from PEI is coming for a visit!  You must provide her with a map to your house, or to visit your school.

 

Learning outcomes

Use Netscape/Internet explorer to access the Internet

Use a search engine to locate a Web Site

Input information to obtain a map

Copy images from Internet onto a word processing document

Produce organized and attractive layout of information obtained.

Procedure

1. Log to Novell

2. Open Internet Explorer or Netscape from desktop. 

3. Open Search engines on the SD23 homepage or select 'search' icon on home page.

4. Choose from anyone of the search engines - search for MapQuest

5. In MapQuest go to On line Maps

 

6.Enter your street address

City, Province, Postal Code, and Country.  (Correct Spelling is important!)

Note:If the program has difficulty finding your street, use a close cross street.

 

7. Zoom in and out to obtain a map of the region and a map of the exact street where you live. (you can choose 'city' or 'region' or 'street' and more!

 

8. Copy two or three maps of different scales onto a Microsoft word document.

 

Customize map - choose a version, which makes your map just shades of grey.

 

To copy, right click with the mouse and select copy. (This may not work with Netscape)

 

9.  In Microsoft word go to edit, paste special and select 'Device Independent bitmap'

Then paste your maps into the word document.

 

10. Quit the Internet and arrange maps on the page with a title e.g. "John's Home"

      Remember to include your street address

You may also include some graphics if there is room and it helps your layout. (e.g. arrows, footprints!!)

Put your name in the Header and date

Put AT7 -- your teacher's name eg Banser in the footer, 10 pt.

11. Remember to save regularly. Have teacher check on screen before printing.
