Freestyle wrestling is one of the Olympic wrestling styles.
The other is Greco Roman - freestyle is different to Greco because it allows holds below the waist.
Here's a quick break down of the rules.
1, The aim is to pin your opponent. A pin is where the shoulders are held down to the mat for one second. A pin wins the match regardless of score.
2, Another way to win a match is by proving technical superiority. This is done by gaining a ten points lead against your opponent.
3, At the end of a match (five minutes) if three or more points have been scored, then the wrestler with the most points wins. Otherwise, in the case of a draw or neither wrestler scoring three points, the match goes into overtime.
4, There are several ways to win points, including:
· taking your opponent down to the mat in control scores 1 point.
· holding your opponent with his or her shoulders exposed to the mat for five seconds scores 1 point.
· turning his or her shoulders to the mat scores 2 points.
· any high altitude throw which lands the opponent in a position of danger (I.e. his or her shoulders exposed to the mat) scores five points.
· lifting your opponent off the ground and dumping him into a position of danger scores five points.
5, A common and popular move is the gut wrench. This involves grabbing the waist or legs and turning into a bridge so that he or she rolls onto his or her shoulders. A recent ruling just made is that once done, you have to score at least one other point by some other move before attempting another gut wrench. In my opinion, the same ruling will be made to apply to cross ankle/fitje pich type moves.
