2. What about the old MRCGP/iMAP?
The old style exam will cease at the end of 2008. For those who have failed either the Paper II or Consulation Modules, there may be the opportunity under exceptional circumstances to undertake either the AKT or CSA respectively. However all appeals need to be undertaken in writing to the RCGP Exam Convenor.

iMAP - the deadline for completion for iMAP has been extended to the end of Dec2009. Click below for further details.

3. What books shoud I buy?
It is important that you invest your money wisely. There are many books out on the market with varying standards of educational quality. It is wise to utilise what is freely available in the first instance - this will enable you to make an informed choice. There are many free resources that one can access. Hot topics for example can be 'spotted' by looking at National Guidance (NICE, DTB) which has been published 6 months prior to the exam. The RCGP newsletter - a monthly publication summarises Hot Topics and is sent to every Trainer. Use the websites that are freely available e.g.www.onmedica.com to access free AKT questions. www.passmedicine.com is also an excellent resource. The area that most candidates perform poorly in is Critical Appraisal - a skill that is not well taught. Utilise the link below - it gives a fantastic introduction to critical appraisal.
For the CSA - Mentor Courses recommends
'Get Through MRCGP : CSA' published by the RSM.
Critical Appraisal
4. What should I look for in a preparation course?
You will identify areas that you are weaker in e.g. critical appraisal. Make sure any course you consider addresses areas that you feel less confident in. The CSA is a very practical exam - one that cannot be crammed for. Make sure that group size is small and that you will get plenty of hands on CSA practice. More importantly do your research on who is teaching you - have they run college courses and are their role players college accredited and trained to give objective and accurate feedback according to the exam criteria. Do they use examiners or tutors? Don't be misled by guaranteed pass rates! Cost is rarely a marker of quality - the exam is expensitve enough! Use resources which are freely available before applying for any course.
5. What is a Faculty?
A Faculty is a local branch of the RCGP. On attaining the MRCGP you will automatically be allocated to a Faculty depending on where you work or live. The local Faculty is a resource which generates professional and social contact with peers, and facilitates contact between GPs and those who work within primary care. Many faculties are seen as local providers of education. Faculties mirror the organisation of Central Council - the governing body of the college.
