Caging Tips
I am frequently asked what type of caging that I recommend. Opinions on this subject vary and can even be controversial. Pet stores and their marketing machine will try to tempt you into thinking that those bright plastic wire and tube cages are a fun place for your hamster to live. The truth is they are NOT! They have many safety issues and the plastic can be chewed on and escapes are frequent. All of those part a difficult to clean and the animal often chooses the most difficult place to use for a potty corner. The plastic parts are brittle and replacements are impossible to find.
They are more designed to please the child and consumer and not the animal. If you do have one of the plastic cages, don’t pitch it yet. It can make a very fun place fur your hamster to play for short periods of time.  An hour or 2 in the in the evening might be fun.
What do I recommend and what do I use:
I use a 10-gallon glass tank with a wire screen lid held in place with clips.
