Winterplace Ski Resort
Flat Top, West Virginia
From February 14th through February 18th, 1999, I had the opportunity to go skiing for the first time.  I had a blast!  I went with my church up to Flat Top, West Virginia where we skiied the slopes of Winterplace Ski Resort.  The crowds were pretty much non-existant.   The weather was a little warm for February, but that really didn't seem to matter much.  I took ski school on Monday morning and two hours later I was going down (on my behind) a black diamond.   The next day, I went down that same slope, and I mean straight down, but did not fall!  I had a great time and below are a few pictures of the slopes.
This is the starting point.  At the top of this green slope called the Wanderer, I took an hour and a half of ski school.  It was a little frustrating learning to ski, but I kept at it and learned quickly.  I was one of the three ski schoolers in our group of about thirty.  As soon as school was over, I met up with the group and we went all over the mountain.
The slope on the left is called Snow Bowl, a blue-rated slope.  Off to the right is a black diamond called Drop Off.  It took me two days to master the Snow Bowl.  It looks easy, but it is actually quite tricky.  By the last day, I had it down to a science.  Drop Off on the other hand, after my straight plunge to the bottom, took only twice to satisfy me.  These slopes were a lot of fun and were very interesting when it came time for night skiing.
This ski trip was my first time snow skiing. I really had a blast.  As you can see by this photograph, there wasn't enough natural snow (no snow at all really), so artificial snow had to be constantly produced.  That was all fine and good with us though.  This was one of the ski lifts that took us from the entrance of the park to the top of one of the mountains at Winterplace.  I would absolutely reccommend taking a trip up!
Here I am, about to take a trip down the side of the mountain.  A few of the people from our group took a head start (as you can see).  We stayed out on the slopes all day long.  Snow tubing was also available, but I was too busy having fun to try that!
