Panel Saws- Flat saws with just a piece of metal and not structural support. Pictured here are
a Ryoba                   and a Rip Saw

The panel saws are usually of two basic varieties                                                                                             a cross cut saw and a rip saw. The rip saw goes                                                                                             against the grain and has teeth that go at  90                                                                                                    degree angles to the metal piece. The cross cut                                                                                               saw goes with the grain.

The Ryoba is usually found in Asian countries (especially Japan) and cuts on the backstroke to take advantage of the physics of the saw. The regular American saws (the crosscut and the rip) cut on the push rather than thepull stroke.

Some saws have spines to increase firmness. These saws have a thin metal backing to prevent any extra back and forth motion. An alterate solution to this is a frame. The back saw and framed miter saw.

There are many different types of planes-
Jack Plane-shorter                                                                                        A plane -->
Jointer Plane-longer has grooves to reduce friction

Router Plane              \
Rabbet/Dado Plane       \

Aim: Work Session/tool familiarity

Wood File- smooths out imperfections. Can be used to smooth small imperfections.
They come in many differents sizes and shapes. A 60-60-60 triangle is used to file one
side of something that is too close to another. A flat file is for general use. There are round files and half round files squares, etc... Can be single or double angled.

Wood Chisel- Can be used for boring or shaping processes.

Glass Paper- the name of Sand paper in England. Used for finishing

BITS
Auger- Drilling a well, removes excess materials...
Arbor/forstner- makes holes- flat bottomed
Countersink- sinks a screw further into the material
Dowel- makes small holes (like for a peg board)
Expansion bit- You can expand the diameter to increase the size of the cut.
Gimlet- works a knot loose
Reamer- smooths a drilled hole
Twist- conventional bit
