GARDENING IN THE SOUTH

Every section of the United States has it's own peculiarities and the South is no different. I am definitely not a master gardener and have no particular skills. What I know comes as a result of my years of having fun outdoors. I look on gardening as a delightful therapy and a wonderful way to feel the closeness of our Creator. So, plan you grounds with care, have patience and understanding with the "green things" and they will reward you with much pleasure.

My mother and I live on three acres in the northeast corner of Louisiana. At the present time my garden takes up about 1/2 acre and due to our very mild winter is already a weedy mess. But, part of owning a garden is the weeding. There is nothing like being on your knees pulling and tugging, to relieve stress. I recommend it highly and practice it quite often.

They are predicting a very dry year for Louisiana again. Thank goodness my garden is composed mainly of daylilies and lantana. If you haven't tried daylilies you are missing out on one of the most beautiful, easy to grow plants in the world

I don't have all of the answers, but I know how to research and the World Wide Web has opened up infinite possibilities. There are thirteen sections in Gardening in the South. The seasons, wildflowers, herbs, roses, butterflies, birds and crafts made from what God has put outside of our front door for us to make beautiful and useful items from. I hope you will enter my garden and enjoy. Perhaps you will learn something and I hope you will e-mail me with ideas and suggestions. This site will grow as you the reader requests more.

Photographing your garden is a great record-keeping technique. Take photos of an area before it becomes a garden, as you install it, as the seasons change, and as the years pass. These photos will show you when to add more seasonal interest in the garden, which plants will complement your color and design schemes, which plants thrived and which didn't and what tasks (like pruning) need doing. It's also simply a way to remember and enjoy a job well done.
