FLOWERING TREES COMING SOON! |
||||||||||||||||||
Tired of contending with low branches, bumpy roots, and sprigs of grass near tree trunks when you mow? Then plant goundcovers like vinca or hostas under your trees. Groundcovers help protect tree trunks from mower and string trimmer damage, cut down on lawn maintenance, and look attractive, too. If you plant a tree, add groundcovers at the same time; you'll avoid disturbing the tree roots later on.

In late fall and winter, when rations are low, mice may nibble on young tree bark. To protect trees from these hungry rodents, wrap a cylinder of 1/4 inch mesh hardware cloth around trunks in early fall. Sink the cloth several inches into the ground to keep mice from digging under it. Remove the cloth in late spring.
In the 1760's before the American Revolution, the Sons of Liberty met in Boston near an elm known as the "Liberty Tree." Because the tree was an emblem of freedom for the rebelling colonists, Bristish soldiers cut the tree down in 1775. Today you can plant an "American Liberty' elm, named in honor of that famous Boston tree and resistant to the devasting Dutch elm disease. For more information about these beautiful trees, write to: Elm Research Institute, Elm Street, Westmoreland, NH 03467.
