Rosedown, located in St. Francisville, is probably
one of the best known plantation homes in the
Florida Parishes. You can tour the grounds for a uniquely "southern" experience. |

Then there is Nottoway, the grand lady of Louisiana,
located in White Castle. A blend of Greek Revival and
Italian architecture and built in 1859, it is the largest
plantation home remaining in the state, with 50 rooms.
It was lovingly restored by Mr. Arlin Deese and is now
a bed and breakfast and open for tours.
I personally would like to take a moment to thank
Arlin Deese for his work. He has restored more than
one plantation home to it's former glory and now owns
Hemingbough, P.O. Box 1640, St. Francisville, La. 70775.
It has beautiful guest rooms overlooking a 38-acre lake
and is home to Hemstead Hall, where many talented

For those of you, like myself, who might find the bed and breakfast rates a little too high, there is the St. Francis Hotel on the Lake, 225-635-3821 or toll-free at 1-800-826-9931. The hotel has recently been purchased and remodeled. Located across the highway from Rosedown, the rooms are spacious and attractive. Excellent food and a view of the beautiful 5-acre lake await the diner in their elegant dining room. Many plantation homes are nearby and downtown St. Francisville is only moments away. |

St. James Parish is located on both sides of the Mississippi River midway between New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Home to the famous Oak Alley Plantation, with its quarter mile of two-hundred and fifty year-old live oaks and "Laura", a Creole plantation where the West African Folktales of "Compare Lapin," known as the legendary "BR'ER Rabbit" were first recorded in the 150 year old cabins.
Be sure and stop by the St. James Culture and Heritage Center in Lutcher for tourist information. |

Located on majestic River Road, the Poche Plantation has been beautifully restored to its original splendor. It is open for group tours (by appt. only) and bed & breakfast stays in surrounding cottages. The last of the great plantations built on the Mississippi River, the plantaion house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places for both its architectural importance and as the residence of Judge Felix Pierre Poche. |
