Christianity in The Sound of Music
Is Maria like Christ, Luther, or just a good Christian?
The musical turned movie “The Sound of Music” has been well-known and
loved for generations. Two German films and a Broadway Musical were around
before the classic 1965 film which will be discussed. The story was based
on the book the Von Trapp Family Singers, the biography of Maria Von Trapp.
Julie Andrews was cast as Maria, the mother-figure of the family, and portrayed
the character as what could be interpreted as Christ-like, or also representing
Protestant leader Martin Luther. Whichever way the song lyrics, her influence,
and personality are interpreted, however, it is undeniable that the
Christian faith had a remarkable impact on the lead character in the movie.
