RETURN TO
Mr. ROWEN'S TRAVELS

China is a huge country in Asia with a huge population. It is the third largest country in the world, in terms of land, and the largest in the world in terms of number of people. It has dry, harsh deserts in the west, mountains and hills in the south, fertile river valleys in the center, and forests in the north. Much of China's land is too hard to live in because it is too dry or cold and nothing can grow there. So even though the country is so big, only about a quarter of the land is livable for China's huge population. There are 1.3 billion people in China and when you're in the cities or towns, it seems like it's always crowded.

China has a long, long history with thousands of years of civilization. It's history is longer than almost any other place in the world. Much of that history and culture survives today in the form of temples, palaces, ruins from old cities, and of course The Great Wall.

But China is also a very modern country. While some of its people still live very simple farming lives without modern machines and electricity, there are millions of Chinese people who live in modern cities with sky scrapers and all kinds of stores, very similar to ones in the U.S. China is an amazing place, a mixture of the old and the new, and always with a lot of Chinese people around with which to share it.
