Zinc Post 1982 Penny and Hydrogen Gas

Problem:

What happens to a post 1982 penny that is placeed in strong HCl? 

Procedure:

1. Record the date and mint of the penny being used.

2.Using a file, etch 5 marks on the outside of the penny

3.Place the penny in the strong HCl.

Chemical Reaction:

Zinc + Hydrochloric Acid ----> Hydrogen + Zinc Chloride

Zn + 2HCl ----> H2 + ZnCl2
