COPPER COMPOUNDS

Problem: What are 4 common chemical reactions with copper compounds?

Procedure:     1.) Using sandpaper shine up 5 iron nails
                     2.) Place 1 nail in each of the 5 test tubes and label the test tubes
                     3.) Fill 4 of the test tubes with 25 mL of distilled water
                     4.) In the 5th test tube, place 25 mL of Copper (II) Nitrate solution
                     5.) In the 1st test tube, place a pinch of Copper (II) Sulfate
                          In the 2nd test tube, place a pinch of Copper (II) Chloride
                          In the 3rd test tube, place a pinch of Copper (I) Chloride
                     6.) Do not disturb test tubes until instructed to remove the nails

Picture:        Draw a diagram which shows five test tubes and the contents of each test tube.

Chemical Reactions:  :#1.) Iron + Copper Sulfate -> Iron (II) Sulfate + Copper
                                         Fe + CuSO4 -> FeSO4 + Cu
                                         (s)      (aq)           (aq)       (s)
                                     #2.) Iron + Cupric Chloride -> Iron (II) Chloride + Copper
                                          Fe + CuCl2 -> FeCl2 + Cu
                                          (s)      (aq)        (aq)      (s)
                                    #3.) Iron + Cuprous Chloride -> Iron (II) Chloride + Copper
                                          Fe + 2CuCl -> Fe Cl2 + 2Cu
                                          (s)      (aq)         (aq)      (s)
                                     #4.) Iron + Cupric Nitrate -> Iron (II) Nitrate + Copper
                                            Fe + Cu(NO3)2 -> Fe(NO3)2 + Cu
                                            (s)       (aq)               (aq)          (s)

Place the correct charge on all ions in the following ionic reactions:

              (s)    (aq)   (aq)  (s)

Safety Notes   :#1.) Wear safety glasses
                       #2.) Do not get the chemicals on skin or clothing

Conclusion:      According to the reations, which reaction contains a coefficient 2?
                      Which copper compound did you find to produce the most copper?
                      What type of chemical reaction was this lab an example of?
                      Did any copper form on the control nail?
