Laboratory Activity # 9 Quarter 4 Packet 5
Name:  __________________________

Octadecanoic Acid

Problem:

What is the Melting point of Octadecanoic Acid (Stearic Acid)?

Procedure:

1. Mass out 2 grams of Octadecanoic Acid and place in a large test tube.
2. Set up a water bath.
3. Slowly heat the water bath and take the temperature every 30 seconds until all acid is melted.
4. Add ice to the beaker and take the temperature every 30 seconds until the liquid freezes.

Safety Notes:

1. Wear safety goggles during the entire lab.
2. Wear an apron.
3. Do not burn yourself.

Picture:

Draw a diagram of the kaboratory activity and label all parts of the setup.

Date Tables:  Graph Data

Time every 30 seconds             Temperature every 30 seconds

1st time being heated

1st time being solidified

2nd Time being heated

Conclusion:

1. What’s the structural formula for Stearic Acid?

2. Graph the theoretical and experimental data

3. From the graph paper, determine the melting and freezing points.
