Flame Test

Problem:  What are the characteristic light emissions of various metals?

Procedure: 1. Bend a paper clip into a wire loop.
                2. Place the wire loop into the chemical.
                3. Place the wire loop into the crucible tongs.
                4. Place the wire loop into the hot part of the bunsen burner flame.
                5. Observe the color given off.
                6. Repeat the other metals without contaminating chemicals.
                7. Fill in the data chart.

Information:   Color                  wavelength
                     Violet                     410. nm
                     Blue                        470. nm
                     Green                      520. nm
                     Yellow                     580. nm
                     Orange                    600. nm
                     Red                         655.nm
                     Red-Orange              620. nm

Data Chart: Metal        formula         Color           wavelength      frequency        energy
                  Stronium       SrCl2          Red
                  Calcium        CaCl2          Orange
                  Copper          CuCl2         Green
                  Lithium          LiCl            Red-O
                  Potassium      KCl             Violet
                  Sodium          NaCl           Yellow

Formulas: wavelength= S.O.L./Frequency             S.O.L. = 3.00*10^8  m/s         S.O.L. = speed of light
                Energy=  constant* frequency                   Constant =  6.625*10^-31 J.s

Safety Notes: 1. Wear your safety goggles.
                     2. Wear an apron.
                     3. Do not burn yourself.
