Writing A Balanced Equation

EXAMPLE: Write a balanced chemical equation for the reaction between copper(ll) sulfate and aluminum to form aluminum sulfate and copper.
Solving process:

Step1: Determine exactly which are the reactants and the products.
           Reactants: copper(ll) sulfate   ------->       products:    aluminum sulfate
                         +  aluminum                                               +  copper

Step2: Assemble the parts of the chemical equation.
            CuSO4 +Al--->Al2 (SO4 ) 3+ Cu

Step3:Balance the equation.
          3CuSO4 + 2Al(SO4)3 +3Al2(SO4)3

Write balanced equations for the following word equations.

1.. potassium chloride + silver nitrate---> potassium nitrate+ silver chloride

2. aluminum hydroxide +sodium nitrate ---> aluminum nitrate +sodium hydroxide

3.  iron metal +copper(2) sulfate---> iron (2) sulfate +copper metal

4. aluminum metal +copper(2) chloride---> aluminum chloride + copper metal

5. potassium bromide---> potassium metal +bromine

6. calcium carbonate---> calcium oxide +carbon dioxide gas

7. zinc metal +oxygen gas--->zinc oxide

8. chlorine gas +sodium metal--->sodium chloride

9. aluminum sulfate + barium chloride---> aluminum chloride +barium sulfate

10. beryllium fluoride+ magnesium---> magnesium fluoride +beryllium

11. sodium hydrogen carbonate---> sodium carbonate +carbon dioxide +water

Predicting Products of Chemical Reactions

Five general types of reactions are single displacement, double displacement , decomposition, synthesis, and combustion. In a single displacement reaction, one element displaces another in a compound- for example: Zn +2HCL--->H2 + ZnCl 2
In a double displacement reaction, the positive and negative ions of the two reactants are interchanged- for example: FeS +2HCl--->FeCl2 + H2 S.In a decomposition reaction, energy that is supplied causes a compound to form simpler compounds and/or elements
- for example: H2CO3 ---> H2O +CO2 . In a synthesis reaction, two or more simple substances(elements or compounds) are combined to form one new, more complex substance- for example: Fe + S---> FeS. In a combution reaction, a compound combines with oxygen, typically producing  carbon dioxide and water - for example: CH4 +2O2 --->CO2 +2H2O.
Complete the word equation for the following chemical equations.  Then write the balanced chemical equation. Indicate the type of reaction on the line to the left of the equation by classifying each reaction as single displacement, double displacement , decomposition, synthesis, or combustion.

12. aluminum sulfate + calcium phosphate --->

13. magnesium chloride + silver nitrate---->

14. sodium chlorate--->

15. hydrogen gas + oxygen gas--->

16. zinc metal + copper(2) nitrate --->

17. Sulfurous acid    --->

18. copper (2) oxide + sulfuric acid   ---->

19. nitrogen gas + hydrogen gas--->
